President Asif Ali Zardari awarded the famous banker and donor Sultan Ali Elana during a special investment ceremony held on Sunday in the House-Sadri, one of Pakistan’s most civilian awards, one of Pakistan’s most civilian awards.
The award was approved by President Zardari on August 14, 2024, during the 78th Independence Day celebrations, acknowledging Alana’s remarkable contribution in the field of public service.
Sultan Ali Elan has been a motivator behind Pakistan’s financial and social sectors. A leader in Microfinance Banking, established the first Microfinance Bank in 2002, which founded financial inclusion.
Its 40 -year career is a testament to innovation and progress, which has identified efforts to replace Pakistan’s financial system to comply with international standards, which has played an important role in eliminating the country from the FATF gray list.
Of his many successes, Elan led the formation of bright digital accounts in September 2020. As of February 2025, the move opened 797,350 accounts and generated more than $ 9.768 billion, in which a seamless channel was presented to overseas Pakistanis for remittances and investment.
He also launched Pakistan’s first agricultural move under the Commercial Bank, which helped small farmers with a sustainable framework that stabilizes rural economies.
In addition to its banking innovations, Elan has been helpful in promoting trade and trade in South Asia and gaining international investment for Pakistan through engagement with global financial institutions, such as IMF, BII, IFC, and Chinese financial institutions.
The establishment of the HBL Foundation has further strengthened access to education and health care for the communities under the influence of the community.
Sultan Ali Elan is the first Pakistani to be awarded the Khatta Award. His identity is a celebration of his vision leadership and a sustainable commitment to the prosperity of Pakistan.
‘Most deserved’
Former Minister of Commerce Hamayun Akhtar praised Sultan Ali Elan, praising his important role in changing Pakistan’s banking system, tourism and education in the name of the “very deserving” recipient of Nashhan Khatt.
Munir Kamal, CEO of Pakistan Banks Association, highlighted Elan’s key contribution, especially his leadership during the privatization of HBL.
He added, “At the time of privatization, he worked fast. His efforts to bring Billion 400 billion to Pakistan were a great success.”
He said that Sultan Elan is an engineer and when he came to Pakistan after completing his education in 1985, there was a shortage of jobs in the country.
Kamal added, “He started working as a banker and never looked back.”
Former Treasury Secretary, Dr Waqar Masood, praised Alana’s role in removing national -level financial challenges, especially Pakistan from the FATF gray list.
Similarly, former Finance Minister Muftia Ismail also acknowledged his efforts to guide Pakistan through FATF sanctions, recognizing his contribution to social projects.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi congratulated Alana and said, “Whenever Pakistan faces major challenges, whether they face natural disasters, economic crisis, or sports support.”
Renowned economist Dr. Ashfaq Hussain described the award as a recognition of Elan’s important contribution to banking, social development, education and health care.
Pakistan Banking Association (PBA) Chairman Zafar Masood said that Sultan Ali Elan’s efforts to attract international investment and modernize Pakistan’s banking system have strengthened the country’s economy.
“Its vision made our financial system a world -class.”
Elan had first founded the Microfinance Bank in 2002 to increase financial inclusion and, according to his friends, the ability to solve the era of concern and economic challenges, not only forming the system but also the future.
