After starting her career with the drama serial Meera Naseeb in 2011, actress Saira Shahroz quickly rose through the ranks as a star and an actor. These days, for example, you can see him on billboards around town as well as in fashion campaign(s).
The model-turned-VJ-turned-actress is not a one-hit wonder though and she proved as much when she worked with some of Pakistan’s leading actors like Marina Khan, Behrooz Sabzwari, Asif Raza Mir, Badar Khalil. Drama series, Isolation called Isolation new series.
After experimenting with television serials and telefilms for some time, Shahroz, like many of his contemporaries, took the leap into cinema. She made her big screen debut with a cameo in this year’s first major release – Ho Min Jahan – and is now gearing up for her next film, Chale Thee Saath in which she plays the lead role.
Apart from this, Shahruz has bagged the lead role in Project Ghazi opposite actor Shehryar Manoor, with whom she shared screen space in Ho Man Jahan.
Interestingly, both his upcoming film roles have a progressive edge. In Chale Tha Saath Mein, she is playing the role of a doctor and in Project Ghazi, she is playing the role of a scientist.
“It’s the character of a scientist; a very independent kind of woman,” notes Shahruz, speaking to Instep about television, cinema and more.
Project Ghazi, which is slated to release next year, has an interesting cast of the likes of Humayun Saeed and also holds the distinction of being Pakistan’s first superhero film. Calling it his dream project, Shahroz noted, “The whole film, the way it’s put together, I always wanted to be a part of it. It’s like a dream project for me.”
The role she is playing in Project Ghazi is a stark contrast to her role in Chale Hai Saath. Happily, in both films she plays a strong, working woman, not a weeping willow. It is also a contradiction when one compares it to television where actresses often play regressive roles.
“I think it’s time we stop portraying women as weak creatures so that the audience can sympathize with them,” Shahroz said when asked what she thought about the dangerous trend that is emerging. Style is very common.
“Although we are very realistic with our plays and stories, we need to be a little more realistic and move beyond the stereotype that the woman is poor and we need to feel bad for her. There’s more to a woman than that!” Shahruz said.
After shooting for one of her films and gearing up for another, Shahroz described her transition from television to films as a good one. She believes that it is a great opportunity for an actor to do films as films allow him to know his character every moment. The 28-year-old star said, “Nothing is rushed; filming is a wonderful experience for actors.”
Although she is now more interested in working in films, she doesn’t mind giving time to television as well. “I can’t say television because that’s what we all started with and no one can deny that when it comes to television, we have a huge audience,” Shahroz observed. “
That said, only an ingenious project could get him back into the world of television.
When it comes to accepting characters, Shahroz looks at how the character moves with the film and how it affects the audience. What is clear is that Shahroz wants to experiment with diverse roles and is ready to play negative roles. “When I was doing plays, I tried a negative,” she told Instep. “It’s actually very refreshing for an actor because it allows them to explore their limits and see what they can do with themselves.”
Shahroz started with modeling and then moved towards acting. The beautiful actress who is associated with popular labels like Al Karam and Zara Shahjahan is often criticized for having a small face. But Shahruz does not let such criticism get him down.
She asserted that if I can’t act, I won’t be offered roles where I need to act. “I believe in myself and I believe that I can probably pull off the roles that are being offered to me. I am very comfortable with the camera and the way I act.”
Sharing a comment she once saw, Shahroz noted, “I once read a comment that said ‘Pretty face, great for billboards but no acting skills!’ It’s not my fault that I have a pretty face (laughs).”
Married with one child, Shahroz believes that the Pakistani film industry is not biased against married women and unlike Bollywood, it does not affect their progress. “Our industry is pretty open in that sense,” he explained. “In Bollywood, if you get married, your career takes a nosedive. There are very few actresses who have the same value after marriage.”
Apart from Pakistani films, Shahroz said that he has been offered roles in Bollywood and Hollywood. But working outside Pakistan is not a serious desire for him. “It’s not my goal to work there,” Shahruz revealed. “If a good opportunity comes my way, I don’t mind accepting it, but I prefer to work in my industry.”
While Saira Shahruz certainly values cross-border cultural exchange, she is not interested in doing the typical Bollywood thing. “I will not go for a role unless I am comfortable with it,” she said. “I take my roles very seriously so I’ll just go for something that’s impactful.”
She will make an exception for Salman Khan as she is a huge fan of the superstar. And, about future plans, Shahroz explained that although he has received several offers, he is focused on his current projects. “Right now I want to focus on what I’m doing. I’m content with what I’m doing career-wise. I’m not going to do anything else this year unless it’s something extraordinary. Don’t be.”
