After the implementation of trade prices on Pakistan by the Trump administration, Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh said the government was doing everything possible to secure flexibility in the new tariff policy of the United States.
Talking to Geo News in Oklahoma, he said he personally met with the US Assistant Trade Representative, and that the meeting was a “positive step ahead”. “We hope the matter can be resolved through dialogue.”
US President Donald Trump imposed a 29 % tariff on imports from Pakistan.
The United States is Pakistan’s export destination, and according to the State Bank of Pakistan, the total exports to the United States during the financial year 2023-24 were $ 5.44 billion.
In almost a century, part of the most aggressive policy of US trade policy, this unprecedented levy has pushed the global markets ahead and the emerging economies.
For Pakistan, whose textile industry relies heavily on exports to the United States, this tariff is more than just a financial shock – it is directly affected by its economic spinal cord.
A country with more than 240 million people now faces a 29 % tariff (starting on April 9) on exports to the United States, which is significantly higher than 10 % baseline, which is implemented on April 5 (today).
Talking to Geo News today, the ambassador said that the new tariff system was based on a formal structure that applies equally to all countries.
He noted, “Since the exports, products and trade volumes of each country are different, the effects of this policy vary according to it. The prices have been applied to both Pakistan and India, but at different rates,” he noted.
He made it clear that the United States is a huge market – so big that no country, or even shared, can meet its demands. “Different countries, especially in South Asia, Pakistan and India, supply products to help meet this demand.”
He emphasized that this policy comes under the discretion of the US government, especially President Trump, aimed at promoting local industries and creating more jobs.
Rizwan also said that comparing the impact on Pakistan and India is misleading, noting that each country has separate products, capabilities and strategic goals. He added, “There may be a strong IT sector in India, but Pakistan is also emerging. We have to explain our path based on national interests and capabilities.”
Commenting on Pakistan’s trade capabilities, Sheikh said that the United States is a wide and open market, and that Pakistan is committed to contributing to global supply chains through its unique offerings. “We are a 240 million sovereign nation,” he said.
Addressing recent social media speculations comprising Pakistani American PTI supporters, Sheikh emphasized the importance of respecting US laws. “If a US violates the law, it should be resolved through legal means, as an ambassador, my role is to maintain and respect both domestic and international law,” he said.
About a bill presented in the US Congress, which allegedly targets Pakistan, the ambassador said: “Thousands of bills are introduced every year-some become laws. Pakistan is a long-term and strong relationship,” he added, adding that President Trump even called it a positive address and a positive address.
On the presence of Petty -related movements in the United States, the Sheikh reiterated that domestic politics should remain within the national boundaries. “Like any country, Pakistan has the right to handle its internal affairs independently,” he said. We do not support foreign intervention. “
He concluded this by emphasizing the flexibility and sovereignty of Pakistan. “We have been among the most difficult regions in the world for 77 years. We know how to solve our problems and defend our national integrity.”
