NEW: US Vice President JD Venus has accused Denmark of ignoring Greenland’s security, and warned that the Arctic region faces growing threats from Russia and China, while calling for close cooperation with the United States.
VP promised respect for Greenland’s sovereignty while urging its people to contribute to their country.
The United States does not have immediate plans to expand its military presence on the ground in Greenland, but they will invest in resources, including additional ships, Vans said.
“Denmark has not maintained the necessary resources to maintain the base, maintain its army, and keep the bases safe from many aggressive attacks from Russia, China and other countries,” said Venice. However, it did not provide details of the attackers.
The US Vice President said that Russia, China and other countries are taking “extraordinary interest” in Arctic passages, naval routes and minerals in the region. The United States will invest more resources, including ships and military ice breakers to establish a strong presence in the country.
The new Prime Minister of Greenland said that the visit to the United States indicated “lack of respect” and called for an unity against “pressure from outside”.
The King of Denmark issued a statement on social media. Shah Frederick said, “We live in a changed reality. There should be no doubt that my love for Greenland and the people of Greenland remains intact.”
Venus gave his remarks during a visit to a US military base in Patfak, northern Greenland. Its visit took place just hours after a new extensive governmental alliance in Novak, which aims to maintain relations with Denmark for the moment.
Upon arrival, Venus welcomed US military personnel at a remote base, thanked them for their service. The outer temperature in the potfol was minus 3 degrees Fahrenheit (-19 ° C).
Venus also promised that the people of Greenland would be “self -determination” and that the United States would respect its sovereignty.
Venus said, “We hope they choose a partnership with the United States, because we are the only nation of the earth to respect their sovereignty and respect their security, because their security is very much our security.”
Since Venice was underway, President Donald Trump told reporters in the White House that the United States needed Greenland to ensure “peace to the whole world”.
“We need Greenland for international security. We have to have a greenland. This is not a question, ‘Do you think we can do without it?’ We can’t, “Trump said.
Trump claimed that “Chinese and Russian ships are all over the Greenland’s waterfalls” and insisted that the United States would not rely on Denmark or any other country to handle the situation.
Trump added that Denmark and the European Union understand the importance of Greenland for world peace, “and if they do not, we have to explain it to them.
The US delegation included Venice’s wife, Osha, National Security Advisor Mike Walts, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
The original plan for the trip included Venice’s wife, who was officially invited by Greenland or Danish officials, in a dog race on the island with Waltz. However, due to public protests and reaction by both Greenland and Denmark, the US delegation avoided public meetings, restricting their delegation to the military base.
Under a 1951 agreement, the United States is entitled to go to its base whenever it wants, provided it is notified of Greenland and Copenhagen. Patfak is located on the shortest route between Europe and North America and is very important for the American ballistic missile warning system.
Greenland, whose capital is close to New York compared to Copenhagen, has major reserves of minerals, oils and natural gas. However, growth has been slow, and US investment in the mining sector is very low. Most of the mining companies working in Greenland are Australia, Canada or British.
A White House official said Greenland has a vast supply of rare land minerals that can strengthen the next generation of the US economy.
New government
Greenland’s new Prime Minister, Jeans Frederick Nelson, called for a political alliance on Friday.
Nelson told a press conference, “At a time when we are under pressure, we should stand together.”
His business supporter, Democrats, who is gradually supported by Denmark, emerged as the largest party in the March 11 election.
Danish Prime Minister Matt Frederickson, who had previously termed the early US visit plans “unacceptable”, congratulated the new Greenland government in the Instagram post: “I look forward to close cooperation in the unnecessary controversy.”
Andreas Asgen, a senior researcher at Fredtjovo Nanson Institute, based in Oslo, said the question is now the question is how far Trump is willing to advance his idea of occupying the island.
“It is not yet possible that the United States will use military sources,” he told Reuters.
“But unfortunately, it is likely that President Trump and Vice President Venice will continue to use other sources of pressure, such as vague statements, Greenland’s semi -official visits and economic devices,” he added.
‘Not for sale’
Reviewing the trip, the Trump administration is trying to re -focus on the debate on key issues: US presence in Greenland, military capabilities, and Arctic Security, a translatable defense and security program in Washington, a Washington -based Center for European policy analysis.
“The course was needed,” Sundak told Reuters.
However, some residents in Novak are angry with the Trump administration ahead of a visit to Venice.
“I am a human being. Humans are not for sale. We are not for sale,” while talking to Reuters, a filmmaker, Tongutiq Larson, said.
Paul shows that almost all the Green Landers oppose to be part of the United States. Anti -US protesters, some wearing some “go to the United States” houses “and” houses of the Yankee “, have held the biggest demonstrations so far in Greenland.
On Thursday, nuclear residents put a grenerous flag in the snow, along with cardboard marks in English: “Our land. Our future.”
