KARACHI: The annual meeting of the General Council of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) took place in APNS House, Karachi on Saturday, and Sarmad Ali was unanimously elected as the President of APNS, Nazfreen Siegel Lakhani, Senior Vice President, Shahbaz Zabri, Shahbaz Zabri, and Shahbaz Zabri.
The meeting was chaired by the outgoing president of the Society, Nazfreen Sigul Lakhni. The Council unanimously approved the Society’s annual accounts for the year 2024, along with the Executive Committee report for the year 2024-2025.
At the General Council meeting, 107 members from across the country attended, headed by Mumtaz Ahmed Filipoto as a member with Syed Irfan Shah and Ali Bin Younis. The Election Commission elected the Executive Committee for the year 2025-26.
After the daily and magazines, the APNS Executive Committee was elected unopposed as a member of the APNS Executive Committee: Daily Jasrat, Daily Jedit, Karachi, Daily Business Recorder, Daily Excavation, Daily Diana, Daily Diane, Daily Times, Daily Times, Daily Times, Daily Times, Daily Times, Daily Times, Daily Times, Daily Times, Daily Times, Tejar, Leices, Leices, Leices, Leices, Leicester. Due to the sad death of Javed Meher Shamsi’s brother, he could not attend the meeting. The President, except the Karachi Daily Seat, compatible the daily collective score as a member of the Executive Committee on Sindh Set. The newly elected executive committee praised the Election Commission’s performance for holding elections.
At the annual meeting of the council, members strongly condemned the permanent ban on public advertising for the Daily Dawn and called it a policy of using the arm and using the advertisement as a device to order the newspaper’s editorial policy.
The meeting states that the proper amount of advertisement for a newspaper is not an honor but a right because the government issues its advertisements for transparency in its work and “the right to know people”.
Government advertisements are paid by the public treasury. Therefore, the government advertisement cannot be issued or denied according to the selection of any government. APN has always asked for a fair, fair and transparent distribution of government advertising.
The Council also expressed its concern over the constant stopping of government advertising to the daily and urged the Ministry to withdraw the ban.
In a resolution, the meeting expressed its deep concern about the condition of print media due to the current economic situation, which has led to a severe financial crisis for newspapers, many of which are on the path to elimination. In this situation, the media expected the government to make financial shortages brave. He called on the new federal government to follow the decision that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif approved in his last period to increase public advertising rates.
Annual General Meeting members urged the federal and provincial governments to pay longer residual dues of the newspaper industry, increase the amount of advertisements, and allocate a separate portion of print media in the advertising budget so that the current situation can be able to survive.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif congratulated those holding the office of the new executive committee of APNS.
He sheltered APN’s newly elected president, Senator Sarmad Ali, senior vice president Nazfarin Sigwal, general secretary, Qazi, Vice President Shahab Zabri, Joint Secretary Mohsin Bilal, and secretary of the Secretary of Finance in his elections.
He expressed the hope that the newly elected office -bearers would play an effective role in the APN to maintain high quality journalism. He hopes that APN will maintain journalistic values and its constructive role in the country under the leadership of the newly elected office.
The Prime Minister said that the government considered the media the fourth pillar of the state and encouraged constructive criticism of the media to improve governance.
Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ataullah Tarar also congratulated those who raised the newly elected office of the APNS Executive Committee.
He described President Sarmad Ali, Senior Vice President Nazfreen Sehgal, Secretary General Uttar Qazi, Vice President Shahab Zabri, Joint Secretary Mohsin Bilal and Secretary of the Finance Secretary.
The Minister said that APNs have always played a significant role in promoting responsible and independent journalism.
He said that the media is an important pillar of any democratic society. He said that praising APN’s role in promoting democracy, maintaining journalistic values and raising awareness among the people.
He said that the government’s priority is to assure full cooperation in this regard and solve the problems facing the media industry. The government is committed to promoting the freedom press and solving the media industry issues, Tarar said.
He expressed the hope that APN would continue to play its traditional role in maintaining journalistic values, promoting the development of the media industry and providing accurate information to the people.
In a statement, the Federal Secretary for Information and Broadcasting Ambrin Jan and Principal Information Officer Mobashir Hassan also congratulated the newly elected office bearers of the APNS Executive Committee.
