Washington/Moscow/Kiev: US President Donald Trump has said he believes his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin is willing to end the war in Ukraine.
Speaking before his meeting in Alaska on Friday, Trump advised that lasting peace would require a follow -up session, which would include Ukrainian President Woldmeer Zillsky.
Trump’s comments came when the Ukrainian leader and his European allies have intensified their efforts this week to stop any agreement between the United States and Russia, emerging from the summit on Friday, which has led to a future attack on Ukraine.
“I think President Putin will make peace, I think President Zelaninski will make peace,” Trump told reporters in the White House. “We’ll see if they will come along.”
Trump has talked about the ceasefire that comes out of the summit and has speculated about a possible second meeting, which includes more leaders.
“I think this will be a good meeting, but more importantly will be the second meeting we are doing. We will meet President Putin, President Zillski, and we will bring some European leaders together. Maybe not. I don’t know.”
Earlier, Putin spoke to his most senior ministers and security officials when he prepared to meet Trump in Alaska’s anchor, which could shape the end of Europe’s largest war after World War II.
In television comments, Putin said that the United States is “in my opinion, passionate and sincere efforts to prevent hostility, stop the crisis and reach the agreements that are interested in all parties involved in the conflict.”
Putin said, “It was happening,” creating long-term conditions of peace in our countries, and Europe and as a whole-by the next stages, we reaches agreements in the field of strategic aggressive weapons control. “
His comments indicate that when he sits with Trump, Russia will control nuclear weapons as part of a widespread dialogue about security. One of the Kremlin assistants said Putin and Trump would also discuss “great potential” for US economic relations.
A senior Eastern European official, who urged him not to disclose his name for discussing sensitive issues, said Putin would try to remove Trump from Ukraine by offering possible progress on nuclear weapons control or something related to a business.
The official said, “We hope that Trump will not be fooled by the Russians. They all understand the dangerous things,” he added, adding that Russia’s sole purpose was to avoid any new sanctions and lift the current sanctions.
‘Like the game of chess’
Trump said there would be a press conference after the talks, but he did not know if it would be joint or not. He also told Fox News in the first interview that there would be “giving and taking” on boundaries and grounds.
“This meeting is like a chess game,” Trump said. He said, “This (first) meeting sets another meeting, but 25 % of the possibility is that this meeting will not be a successful meeting.”
Trump said that Putin and Zilnsky would have to agree to: “I will not discuss their deal.”
Russia controls almost a fifth of Ukraine, and Zilnsky and European residents fear that a deal can strengthen the benefits, which benefits Putin’s 11 -year efforts to capture Ukrainian land and encourages it to expand it in Europe.
“It would be terrifying to see how it all opens in the coming hours,” said a European Union diplomat. Trump had a very good call with Europe yesterday, but it was yesterday. “
European leaders said that Trump had agreed to join security guarantees for Ukraine at the last ditch virtual meeting with European leaders and Zilinski on Wednesday, though after that he did not mention any public about them.
Friday’s summit, Russia’s first summit after June 2021, came to a war in one of the most difficult moments for Ukraine, which displaced tens of thousands and millions of people after a full -fledged Russian attack in February 2022.
Speaking after the Wednesday meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Trump had said that the Translantic NATO alliance should not be part of any security guarantee, which was designed to protect Ukraine from future attacks in a post -war settlement.
However, Trump also said that the United States and all consent allies should be part of security guarantees.
Extending this, a European official told Reuters that Trump said he was willing to provide some security guarantee to Europe, without what they would be.
The official said, “It felt like a big step,” which did not want to reveal the name.
It was not immediately clear what such guarantees could mean.
On Wednesday, Trump threatened “severe consequences” if Putin does not agree with peace in Ukraine and if his meeting on Friday is fruitless, he warns about economic sanctions.
It is likely that Russia will resist the demands of Ukraine and Europe, and its position has not changed before, as Putin first stated in detail in June 2024.
