OOS has a profound role in public education. Every year, only a handful of zoos in the country’s leading zoos are found in 10 to 15 million visitors. It is a huge platform for the formation of public attitudes and behaviors about forest life and environmental protection that should be used responsibly.
Although this educational potential is undeniable, there are serious concerns about how the giraffes, especially the giraffes, have made big in the zoo. The deaths of elephants, rightly, are in public grief. But the giraffe – which is the highest, the most beautiful and beautiful of the creation – is largely slippery.
Since 2007, Pakistan has imported 12 giraffes. Nine of them are dead. Four of the six giraffes at the Peshawar zoo. Two of the three imported to Lahore in 2018; And in 2007, the Lahore Zoo was imported all three. Earlier, in 2000, a female giraffe died at the Lahore Zoo. These deaths were due to diverse reasons – heart failure, blood parasites, diarrhea. Throughout the history of maintaining the giraffe of Pakistan, I have been a record of only one generation: a calf born at the Karachi Zoo in 1966, which was not saved with regret. One can mention that in some African countries, the giraffes are legally subjected to trophies under the justification for economic or food security. But here, we have to focus on our home and improve.
The Lahore Zoo Safari is now preparing to receive 12 more grays. The Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department has established a world -class facility, which is a wide open wall with a wide wall and fans and cooling systems on an acre of trees. Veterinary facilities are modern, and I personally met both young doctors at the Lahore Zoo and senior veterinarian Dr. Rizwan Khan at Safari: both are capable and extremely determined.
The main problem is how forest life is achieved in Pakistan. Under the rules of the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority, the purchase of forest life is treated like another commodity such as office furniture or generator. This system can ensure transparency, but when life is applied to dangerous animals, it fails to fail. Under the current rules, the lowest bidder wins. He is often an animal dealer. These dealers behave like secret agents. They provide minimal information about the source, health or history of animals or transport routines. They cut the corners of the usual – using damaged crates, making documents and ignoring the standard procedures. They sometimes chart up private aircraft to avoid direct animal rules of IATA, which are approved under the CITE. This endangered species on international trade convention. This is not speculative. The last time the Jirafis arrived at the Lahore Zoo, their crates damaged the floor, which resulted in injuries to the bells and the magnets. It is also difficult to imagine their discomfort during transport, and later suffer from health complications.
We must be considered as a inventory that changes the life of the endangered forests. There are no machines with Geraphs warranty periods. Every death is a tragedy – not only for the animal, but also for the reputation of our protection and public education system.
The upcoming shipment offers a serious example. The zoo has demanded 12 grays, but the dealer is supplying 15. Why? Reflecting potential deaths during the Qur’anic period – because the dealer is bound to change any loss according to an agreement. This mentality treats giraffes, such as spare parts, not emotional creatures.
Giraffes are the species of supplement II under the CITES, which means that their trade is allowed but it should be strictly controlled. Yet these rules are frequent.
Giraffes are often three packed per crate. Loading can take 2-4 hours. Most aircraft can adjust the maximum internal height ~ 3 meters, a 3 -year -old woman can exceed 3.2m, which means that a giraffe of this age will be tightened in a stressful condition. Most giraffes are transferred to a young age to meet the height restrictions and guidelines, provided the dealer is moral and follow the guidelines. Inappropriate hydration, high heat or stress can be fatal during this stage.
CITES permits should not be released source facilities by intermediates or dealers. In the coming COP20 in Samarkand (November – December 2025), the proposal to bring the population of the giraffes should be strongly opposed to the proposal to bring the garage population in eight African countries (Angola, Botswana, Association, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabe). Such measures increase the risk of exploitation by dealers and endanger animal welfare.
Within Pakistan, we need separate rules to achieve forest life. It should not be considered as tender goods. A separate purchase process operated under ethical standards and veterinary monitoring, should be manufactured for living animals, preferably prohibiting wild caught animals and allowing only captive animals, which have been obtained through zoos. Transport logistics should adhere to the IATA’s direct animal rules without exception. Before receiving a species, the previous experience and appropriateness should be thoroughly reviewed.
