US President Donald Trump said Friday that he had deployed two nuclear submarines to unknown areas, in response to which he called the threats of former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s “stupid and inflammation”.
Security analysts called Trump’s move with Moscow to increase rhetoric, but not necessarily a soldier, because the United States already has nuclear -powered submarines that are capable of killing Russia.
On Thursday, Medvedev said that Trump should remember that Moscow had the last resort of Soviet -era nuclear strike capabilities, when Trump asked Medvedev to “see his words”.
“On the basis of former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s very provocative statements … I have ordered two nuclear submarines to position in the right areas, only if these stupid and inflammatory statements are more than that,” Trump said in a Friday social media post.
He added, “Words are very important, and can often lead to non -intentional results. I hope this will not be one of these events.”
Later, journalists were asked why they ordered the submarine movement, Trump said: “The former president of Russia made a threat, and we are going to protect our people.”
The US Navy and the Pentagon declined to comment on Trump’s remarks or whether the submarines had been transferred. In view of their sensitive mission in nuclear barriers, the US military is very low to discuss US submarines and locations.
Trump’s comments have emerged at the growing tension between Washington and Moscow, when Trump is disappointed that he looks at his failure to end his three -year -old attack on Ukraine as President Vladimir Putin.
He did not specify what it meant by “nuclear submarines”. US military submarines are nuclear -powered and can be equipped with nuclear shapes, though they are not all.
But any talks by the US president about potential nuclear military capabilities raise concerns, security experts said, adding that the United States has historically avoided Russia’s nuclear Sabbath in view of the threats of the world’s most destructive weapons.
“It’s irresponsible and unpleasant,” said Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association’s Advocacy Group. “No leader or deputy leader should not threaten a nuclear war, let it be on social media.”
The Federation of American scientists’ Hans Christinson noted that the American nuclear submarines-which is a part of the so-called nuclear-tried with bombers and land-based missiles-was always placed in Russia to launch nuclear weapons missiles on targets.
“Subs always exist at all times and do not need to be moved to position,” he said. “They gave to Medvedev responding to these crazy statements.”
There are a total of 14 Ohio class nuclear -powered submarines in the United States, each of which is capable of carrying 24 tridal II D5 ballistic missiles that can provide more than 4,600 miles of thermonicular warheads.
According to the nuclear risk Initiative Arms Control Group, there are at any time between 8 to 10 Ohio class submarines.
‘The net of commitment’
The Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Medidif, has emerged as the most -speaking anti -Western Hawks, the highest -speaking anti -Kremlin, since Russia sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine in 2022.
US officials told Reuters before Trump’s latest remarks that Medvedev’s comments were not being taken as a serious threat, and it is not clear what Trump’s latest announcement has failed outside the public confrontation between the two on social media.
Trump and Medvedev have traded Trump in recent times when Trump said on Tuesday that Russia had “10 days” to agree with a ceasefire in Ukraine or to target tariffs.
Crustinson said Trump is making “a net of determination” by giving expectations that if tensions with Russia increase, he can resort to nuclear weapons.
Nevertheless, Evelyn Farkas, the Executive Director of the MacCon Institute and former Pentagon official, presented the idea that it could cause a nuclear dispute.
He said, “This is really signaling. This is not the beginning of some nuclear confrontation, and no one reads it like this. And I will imagine that Russians do not.”
However, Trump’s actions are unlikely to change the way to Russia to Ukraine, he added.
Moscow, which has set its terms for peace in Ukraine, has not indicated that it will comply with Trump’s 10 -day deadline for August 8.
Putin said Friday that Moscow has hoped for more peace talks, but the pace of war is in favor of it. He did not quote the deadline.
Trump, who in the past fought good relations with Putin, has expressed disappointment with the Russian leader, accusing him of “bullying” and termed Russia’s latest attacks on Ukraine as invasive.
