Bangkok: Thailand launched airstrikes on Cambodian military targets on Thursday when Cambodia fired a rocket and artillery, killing a civilian in a dramatic way of a long -running border between the two neighbors.
Neighbors have been closed in a bitter raid about the area known as the Emerald Triangle, where both countries and Laos borders, and which has several ancient temples.
The dispute has been dragged for decades, which has been burning in bloody military clashes 15 years ago and in May, when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a firefight.
The dispute was flying on Thursday, Cambodia fired rockets and artillery shells in Thailand, and the Thai army entered the F -16 jets to carry out airstrikes.
According to Thai military deputy spokesman Racha Soxwanon, six jets were deployed from Oban Rathani Province, which killed two “Cambodian military targets on the ground.”
The Thai Prime Minister’s Office said a shell of Cambodian Artillery collided with a house above the border, killing a civilian and injuring three others, including a five -year -old child.
The two sides blamed the other for launching a fight, which broke out near the two temples on the border between the Thai province of Srin and the Odar Manchi in Cambodia.
“The Thai army violated the territorial integrity of Cambodia’s kingdom, which launched an armed attack on Cambodian forces, which is deployed to defend the country’s sovereignty,” a Defense Ministry spokesman said in a statement.
“In response, Cambodia’s armed forces exercised their legitimate right to defend its defense to remove the Thai attack and protect Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
The Thai army accused Cambodian troops of first firing, and later accused them of “targeting civilians”, which says two rockets of BM11 have targeted a community in the Surin Cup Quang District, injuring three people.
According to the Thai army, the clashes began at around 7:35 am (0035 GMT) when a unit protecting Ta Mayon Temple was heard on the head of the Cambodian drone.
Later, six armed Cambodian soldiers, one of whom had taken a rocket -powered hand grenade, contacted the barbed wired fence in front of the Thai post.
The army said that Thai troops shouted to warn them, but around 8:20 am, Cambodian forces opened fire on the east side of the temple, about 200 meters from the Thai base.
“The situation needs to be handled cautiously, and we have to work in accordance with international law,” said Thailand’s acting prime minister Phamtham Vichiachai.
“We will do our best to protect our sovereignty,” he said.
The Thai Embassy in Nam Pina urged its citizens to leave Cambodia “as soon as possible” until they have immediate reasons to stay in the Facebook post.
Long -running row
The violence came after Thailand expelled Cambodian ambassador, and five Thai military patrol members were injured in a protest after being injured by a landmine.
Vachiachai said the Thai army investigation has provided evidence that Cambodia has placed new mines in the controversial border area.
On Thursday morning, Cambodia announced that he was down the “lower level” relationship, he pulled out everyone except one of his diplomats and expelled his Thai equals from Naman.
In recent weeks, a series of tight -for -tate swipes have been seen on both sides, with Thailand preventing some imports to Border Crossing and Cambodia.
The border rows also launched a domestic political crisis in Thailand, where Prime Minister Patungan Shinawatra has been suspended from the post of postponement of his morality investigation into his behavior.
A diplomatic call between the former Cambodia ruler and Prime Minister Han Moniet’s father, Patungner and Hun Sen was leaked from the Cambodian party, which gave rise to a judicial inquiry.
Last week, Han Moniet announced that Cambodia would start to contribute to ordinary citizens next year, which would activate a long -term draft law.
