ISLAMABAD: Numerous monsoon rains have claimed 21 more lives in the last 24 hours, which led to nationwide casualties to 242, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif officials directed the authorities to speed up rescue and rehabilitation works.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) data, the deaths were caused by floods, falling homes, drowning, electricity, electricity attacks and land sliding.
In the last 24 hours, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa saw 10 deaths and two injured, five deaths and one injury were found in Islamabad, Sindh reported two deaths, three deaths and one injury were found in Gilgit Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir reported one death and two injuries.
The 21 people who died in the previous day included six men, three women and twelve children. Two of the six injured were men, one was a woman, and three children.
The NDMA said that since the beginning of the monsoon, the total number of casualties has increased to 242, while 598 people have been injured. The deceased includes 83 men, 43 women, and 116 children. The injured include 232 men, 167 women, and 199 children.
Punjab has witnessed the most casualties so far, 135 were killed and 470 were injured.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported 56 deaths and 71 injured, followed by Sindh 24 deaths and 40 injured.
Balochistan has 16 deaths and four injured, Gilgit -Baltistan three deaths and four injured, Azad Kashmir two deaths and eight injuries, while six deaths and one injury have been found in Islamabad so far.
The NDMA said that most of the deaths were due to the fall of the houses during the rainfall, followed by drowning, electricity, flash floods, electro -electrocin and land sliding.
In the last 24 hours, 50 houses were destroyed, and eight cattle animals were killed. The total number of damaged houses in the monsoon has now reached 854, while 208 cattle animals have been killed.
‘Find out relief efforts’
In separate statements, the President and the Prime Minister expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of lives due to rain and floods in different parts of the country.
He directed the concerned departments to intensify relief activities in the affected areas.
Prime Minister Shahbaz directed the NDMA to remain in permanent contact with the provinces and the concerned departments and provide them with all necessary assistance.
He emphasized that the aid should be delivered to the affected people immediately and in the coming days all preparations should be placed to deal with any possible situation.
Premier also directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) and the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) to speed up the maintenance of highways and the restoration of flood -hit roads.
PMD has predicted heavy rain
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted rain and thunderstorms in Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Punjab, Gilgit -Baltistan and northeastern Balochistan, which forecasts from July 23 to July 23.
The daily weather forecasts that “during this period, heavy decline (very heavy) is also likely in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pothohar region, northeastern Punjab and Kashmir. Hot and humid weather is expected in the southern parts of the country.”
