Since the return of Taliban rulers in Afghanistan in 2021, Pakistan has witnessed the increase in terrorist activities, especially its Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan provinces.
In May this year, Pakistan saw a slight increase in militant attacks, even as neighboring country failed to increase military tensions with India.
The data released by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICS), based in Islamabad, indicates a 5 % increase in attacks compared to April, though the overall image shows that the militant groups are widespread despite regional geographical political climate.
According to the PICS monthly security diagnosis, 85 militant attacks were recorded in May, which increased from 81 to 81 in April.
The incident resulted in 113 deaths, including 52 security forces personnel, 46 civilians, 11 militants, and four members of the peace committees. This month, 182 people were injured, including 130 civilians, 47 security personnel, four militants, and members of a peace committee.
Although the total number of attacks has only seen a slight increase, the deep sinking in the data shows some trends.
The deaths of security personnel increased by 73 percent, which indicates a constant threat posed by Pakistan’s armed forces.
Civilian injuries were also dramatically observed by a 145 % increase, which increased from 130 to 130 in May, which highlighted the increasing effects of militant activities on the general public. On the contrary, security personnel were injured by 20 %, which increased to 59 to 47.
At least 59 militants were killed in operations launched by security forces during the month, while five security personnel lost their lives.
Combining militant attacks and security operations, the overall crash toll for May was 172, including 57 security personnel, 65 militants, 46 civilians, and four members of the Peace Committee.
