UN: Pakistan has called on the United Nations to take concrete steps to resolve the decades -old Kashmir conflict, and call it an important cause of friction with India.
Addressing a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York after taking over as the UN Security Council for July, Pakistani Ambassador Asim Iftikar Ahmed said the matter could no longer be under the carpet.
He emphasized that the Security Council, especially its permanent members, has the responsibility to follow their resolutions and help bring lasting peace to the region.
“It is time to focus on this (Kashmir dispute), and I would say that it is not only Pakistan’s responsibility-we are temporarily, two years as a non-permanent member,” he answered a question, told a New York headquarters at the UN headquarters.
“I think it is the responsibility of the Security Council itself and especially the permanent members to see that they really take some special steps to implement their resolutions.”
“This is a way forward,” he added.
Prior to the press conference, the 15 -member council met and approved the work program for the month of July.
Ambassador Ahmed said the UN Charter’s goals and principles have the roots of the UN Charter’s goals and principles.
He said that Pakistan will summon two signature programs during its presidency. It is a high -level debate about promoting international peace and security through multilateral and security and peaceful settlement of conflict, which is scheduled for July 22, and on July 24 on unorganized cooperation. He said that the UN Security Council has announced in numerous resolutions on it that, in addition to other elements, the Kashmiris give the people the right to self -determination.
The envoy to Pakistan also noted the dimensions of peace and security, political and legal dimension, and human rights dimensions, “This is a sharp dispute. It has many dimensions.”
He added, “This is a problem that has not been resolved. It is a cause of tension and friction between India and Pakistan. This is a hindrance to the development of friendly relations in our region. It is time to pay attention to it.”
He said the council will be focused on key global issues, including the Middle East situation and the progress made in Africa, Europe, Asia and Latin America.
The Security Council presided over the World Body Power Center-IncC as a non-permanent member of the UNCC, which began in January 2025. The President roams the monthly 15 members, according to the alphabet.
The former terms of the council were in 2012-13, 2003-04, 1993 – 94, 1983–84, 1976-77, 1968–69 and 1952-53.
Pakistan was elected as a non -permanent member with the strong support of the UN membership, which received 182 out of 193 votes.
