So grab that packet of chips, settle into your most comfortable seat and enjoy this exclusive peek into a mixed bag of heart-warming episodes from the Filmfare Awards.
1960: Vijayanthimala, resplendent in white and gold, sang two numbers that resulted in the crowd going wild. Dilip Kumar approached him after the show and said,
“You wicked, wicked girl—it’s creeping up on us.” But the truth is that she died a thousand deaths before she even went on stage for the act. In fact, he even requested a Filmfare staffer to cancel his act.
1967: Meena Kumari was bedridden with a fractured arm but promised to be present to present Waheeda Rahman with the Best Actress trophy for Guide. But there was no sign of him on the night of the award. An hour later she looked like a million rupees in a white silk saree and handed over the trophy to her favorite actress Waheeda with one hand.
1969: IS Johar was asked to present the best comedian award that year. When he came on stage, he raised the trophy and stormed towards the mic. He was angry at the injustice done to him. He had never won a Filmfare Award and believed that he deserved it the most. He also said he would have to give the award to a “totally unknown” actor, Johnnie Walker, for the hunt. However, he broke into a smile when he handed over the trophy, making the audience laugh as well.
1981: Kishore Kumar won the award for Best Playback Singer for Khoomi Se Bayy. He sang two songs of Muhammad Rafi which pay tribute to the great singer. The fun really started when Ashok Kumar was also called on stage. The brothers sang a duet and took friendly digs at each other.
1990 January: Aamir Khan became the new poster boy after his debut film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Since they were performing on a big stage for the first time, they were a bundle of nerves. However, on D-Day he showed hardly any signs of panic with a brilliant performance. It also turned out to be a very busy night for him as he came to receive six awards from the QSQT staff. On winning the sensational debut award, he was heard saying, “Thank God I finally have a trophy of my own.”
1990 December: Gulzar came on stage to present the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Female). Opening the envelope and seeing the name, he smiled and said, “That’s one name I’ll have to call differently,” and said, “Aji Sunti Ho.” Rakhi came and took the Ram Lakhan award from the man with whom she had shared so many beautiful moments. Later that night, Rekha read out Jackie Shroff’s nomination for Best Actor in Bird. Jackie jumped in excitement and received the award with her son Tiger. But the tiger fell asleep in that excited moment.
1993: A bomb threat was issued at the awards that year. Police arrived with guard dogs to increase security. But the show must go on and he did a pretty good job. Shah Rukh Khan recalled on stage the time he won a trophy for the first time in school. He ran back to show his mother, but she was not home. Now he had won his first Filmfare Award for a sensational debut and things were still the same. His mother had passed away. SRK raised his trophy to the sky and said in a choked voice, “This is for you mom.”
2001: For the first time in Indian cinema, a wax figure of a film legend was immortalized at Madame Tussauds. Amitabh Bachchan now had his waxy look. It was at our awards ceremony that the world saw the sculpture for the first time. Amit Ji Humshakal brought down the house. The occasion was lit up by AB’s quick responder with his twins.
