KARACHI: The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) is ready to launch a massive awareness campaigns in Karachi to encourage the separation of domestic waste, which will enable the city’s daily municipal waste to extract more recycling and compostable materials, which is currently up to 14,000 tonnes.
As part of the move, SSWMB will sign a Memorandum of Education soon with the Education Department’s Education Department to introduce waste separation activities in schools. Similar drives will be made on the university campus to include and include the educational community.
Talking to the news, Tariq Ali Nizmani, Managing Director of SSWMB, said that Karachi’s municipal waste is up to 50 % of the garbage, and it can be converted into a hand.
Nizmani said that special training sessions will be organized to provide residents to teach how to convert their kitchen waste into the house, thus reducing the amount of waste sent on land full sites.
He pointed out that about 30 % of urban waste contains plastic, cardboard, paper and other solid materials, which can be recycled in separate and useful products.
He also said that two compost plants have already been established in Karachi, and a pilot project for the manufacture of biogas is currently underway.
He added that three acres of land in Karachi’s cattle colony has been allocated to facilitate the production of biogas on a full scale, and SSWMB will soon occupy the site.
In addition, two new trash transfer stations (GTS) will be constructed this year under the World Bank’s financing Solid West Emergency and Performance Plan, with two more GTS facilities scheduled for completion next year. These stations will increase the ability to implement SSWMB’s plastic, organic and other renewable waste more effectively.
Nizmani expressed the hope that two private firms, who have received the intentions of the Sindh government for wasting energy projects, will begin construction of their plants in the next few months.
He revealed that it is expected that the waste energy facilities will be operational within the next 18 months, which will lead to a significant development in the management of sustainable urban waste. He emphasized that these projects are being implemented to modernize the waste of Karachi waste through maximum public participation.
At the same time, SSWMB aims to ensure that usable content is removed in a regular and scientific manner, and is proposing a severe penalty for informal waste pickers who re -use the useable items, recklessly in the drains and highways.
