In a notable diplomatic achievement, Pakistan has been appointed Vice Chair of the United Nations Security Council Anti -Terrorism Committee, responsible for overseeing the implementation of Resolution 1373 (2001) on World Counter Terrorism measures.
Islamabad has played an active role in promoting the principles and goals of the UN Charter and has contributed to international peace and security, including one of the leading countries in the United Nations peace missions around the world. It was elected to the UN Security Council in June 2024 and was replaced by Japan in the Asian seat.
Pakistan has been the worst victim of terrorism for more than two decades as the country has damaged more than 80,000 lives and thousands of injured.
In order to launch attacks inside Pakistan, Pakistan has repeatedly released India’s terrorist groups such as Tahir-Tatan Pakistan (TTP) and the support of the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA).
Relations between neighbors equipped with both nuclear weapons came to the lowest level after the recent standing about the killing of 26 tourists in Pahalgam, the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, which New Delhi accused Islamabad.
Pakistan clearly rejected the incident, while presenting a transparent investigation into the incident, and drawing the attention of the international community to Indian proxies involved in terrorism within the country.
According to a statement issued by the Permanent Mission of Pakston in the United Nations today, Pakistan has also been appointed chair of the UN Security Council Committee, which has been set up under the Resolution 1988 (2011), which oversees the implementation of the Taliban sanctions measures.
Recognizing its diplomatic engagement, Pakistan has been appointed co -president of IWG, along with documents and ways to work, as well as the Security Council’s informal working group (IWG).
The group of documents works to increase transparency, performance and participation in the council’s procedure, while sanctions focus on improving the impact and design of UN sanctions governments.
The mission said, “This appointment represents Pakistan’s acknowledgment of Pakistan’s active engagement with the UN system, including its constructive role as elected member of the Security Council. He also recognizes Pakistan’s counter -terrorism efforts internationally.”
It added, “Pakistan, along with the UN and fellow member states, is committed to working in the global war on terror in collaboration with the UN Charter principles and goals, as well as in collaboration with its international partners.”
In the latest UNSC elections held on Tuesday, five new countries-Bahrain, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Latvia, Liberia, and Colombia-1 were elected to the Council for the two-year term, starting January 1, 2026.
The Security Council is the only UN agency that can legally make decisions such as imposing sanctions and allowing the use of force. It has five veto -powered members: Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
The remaining 10 members are elected, five new members are included every year. Bahrain, Colombia, DRC, Latvia, and Liberia – all selected in unmanned slates – will replace Algeria, Sierra Leone, South Korea, Guyana and Slovenia.
To ensure geographical representation, seats are allocated to regional groups. But even if the candidates are running unopposed in their group, they still need to get more than two -thirds of the General Assembly.
