PARIS: Three defending champions IGA Sweettic set up a blockbuster French Open semi -final confrontation with world number one Ariana Sabalinika on Tuesday, with men’s holder Carlos Alcaraz chasing the last four berths.
Fifth seed, Sweetic passed the 13th seed Ukrainian Elena Sweetolina 6-1, 7-5 in Paris, when Olympic champion Zheng Convener, 7-6 (7/3), top women’s Budget Subalinika won the nerve quarterfinals against 6-3.
After ending his 26th win in the French Open, Sweetic said, “(Arina) has a great season so I am not going to lie, it will be a difficult match. But I am happy with this challenge.”
Both players have shared the number one rating between them since April 2022. Sablnka ended the 11 months of Sweetik last October as World No.1, but the pole is 8-4 in his previous meetings.
World No. Five Switik has been struggling for its best form and has not reached any final since winning the French Open title last year. But he gave Switolina a little chance on his favorite soil surface, ease the first set for breaks in the fourth game.
The pair exchanged continuous service intervals at the second set of the second set, before Swetk forced 4-5 progress with a powerful forehead under the line. He then sealed the win with a backback twenty -one.
Sweetic aims to become the first woman to win the crown of four straight Roland Garros since Sussein Langen 102 years ago.
Earlier, the US Open Champion Subalinika’s coming to power and Zheng refused to avenge the Chinese star in Rome for his recent loss. “The last tournament was very tired,” Sabalinika said.
“I was more fresh today. I was ready to fight.” Sablenka once again got the upper hand on Zheng, which was in connection with a 10 -match win on Paris clay after running in Olympic gold last year.
Zheng was broken and led 4-2 in the first set. But numerous extraordinary errors – a total of 31 – allowed Belarus to return. The second set was also harsh before Sabalinika took advantage of her opponent’s mistakes and took a 4-3 lead.
Zheng, who lost seven times in eight meetings in the Australian Open final last year, said, “I gave it a chance, so easy,” Madrid Open champion Sabalinika feels that he is ready to go all the way to Paris, where his previous best performance was two years ago.
“This is a high level match. I’m excited to go there and to do everything to fight and win,” said Sabalinika, the second seed of Men’s, about his tie against Sweatic.
Alcaraz is the last eight to run for the fourth year, and its purpose is to become the third man in this century to defend his title, after Gastu Koten and Rafael Nadal. The 22-year-old has dropped a seat in each of the last three rounds, but has recorded a 4-2 career record against Paul, which is the 12th seed, which Al-Karz defeated in the quarter-finals of the Paris Olympics last August.
“I remember that every match I played against him was really hard,” said Alakaraz. “His level is really high. He is very confident.” If Alakaraz passes through the police, he will meet the Italian Lorenzo Mutti and Francis Typho in the quarter -finals of the second men’s quarter -finals.
Misty has been one of the soil farm players this season, which has reached at least four in the three principal warm -up events before the French Open. Both Moses and the US 15th Seed Typho are appearing for the first time at this stage of Roland Gerros.
TIAFOE, twice the US Open semi -finalist, has yet to leave a seat in Paris and he is confident he may move even more. Both Paul and Typho are the first American men’s quarter -finals in the program since Andre Ages in 2003.
