KARACHI: Karachi has been treated by at least 19 light earthquakes since Sunday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) earthquake monitoring center confirmed that residents of different parts of the city have raised concerns.
The latest earthquake took place at 9:57 am, with a magnitude 2.8. The 16th earthquake was located northeast of Malir, about 15 km from the area, 40 km deep.

The third earthquake occurred on Tuesday at 6:42 am near Korangi with a magnitude 3.2 and 11 km deep.
From Sunday evening, light earthquakes have been felt repeatedly in Lindhi, Quaidabad, Malir and adjoining palaces of Karachi, which has caused concerns among the residents. No particular damage or injuries were reported.
Reasons behind the earthquake
Chief meteorologist Aamir Haider attributed the ongoing earthquake to activate the landfall line, which he said is currently undergoing a normal phase.
According to Haider, light earthquakes can continue for another week as energy is slowly being released from the error line. He explained that this slow release of energy helps prevent the risk of a major earthquake.
He noted, “This particular fault line has been activated after decades,” he said, adding that the depth of the recent earthquake is because they are being felt more intensely throughout the city.
Haider emphasized that the buildings directly on the Fall Line should be able to withstand the earthquake of 6 magnitude. He also pointed out that the fault lines operated by Karachi have historically been identified and documents.
Responding to concerns about cracking in homes, Haider made it clear that such matters are related to structural integrity and not necessarily associated with the earthquake activity.
He also mentioned the presence of another fault line near the police station, which played a vital role in the overall earthquake activity in Karachi and its surroundings.
