WASHINGTON: Social media Jogarnat Meta is tried on Monday, facing serious allegations by the US government that it has misused the power of its market to achieve Instagram and WhatsApp before becoming a rival.
Going forward, a trial in a Federal Court of Washington eliminates Meta Boss Mark Zuckerberg’s hopes that Donald Trump’s return to the White House will see the government seeing the implementation of a non -confidence law against Big Tech.
The Meta Case Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which is being created by a powerful US consumer protection agency, can see the Facebook owner forcing Instagram and WhatsApp to distribute, which has grown to the global power houses since its purchase.
The trial will be decided by Judge James Boseberg, which is also chairing a high -level case containing the White House orders to deport Venezuela using the war -timing law.
The case against Meta was actually filed in December 2020 during the First Trump administration, and everyone’s eyes were on whether they would ask the FTC to stand.
Zuckerberg, the third richest man in the world, has repeatedly visited the White House when he tries to persuade the US leader to choose a settlement rather than fight the trial, which will be extraordinary at this stage.
FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson eliminated such possibility, saying, “If anything happens, I would be very surprised.”
As part of his lobbying efforts, Zuckerberg participated in the Trump opening fund and restored the moderate policies of content. He also bought a $ 23 million mansion in Washington, which was seen as a bid to spend more time near the political power center.
“If Zuckerberg went to the White House and was injured by a settlement, it would be a Border Line scandal,” said Jonathan Kantter, a dissenting -imposed under the Biden administration.
Meta LaChary has recently represented one of the five major tech anti -trust measures launched by the US government.
Google is facing two cases and was convicted of abuse in the search market last August, while Apple and Amazon are also going to court.
A long line of former Lieutenant Sheryl Sandburg, Zuckerberg and rival companies will be followed by a trial for at least eight weeks.
The main focus of the matter is Facebook’s Instagram’s 2012 Billion Purchases-then a small but promising photo-sharing app that is now proud of two billion active users.
An email from Zuckerberg presented by the FTC has shown them the appearance of Instagram as “really scary”, adding “Why do we want to consider paying a lot of money for it.”
The FTC says the acquisition of Meta’s $ 19 billion WhatsApp in 2014 followed the same approach, fearing that the messaging app could either be transformed into a social network or could be purchased by a competitor.
Meta’s defense lawyers will argue that the investment for her has turned the acquisitions into blockbusters that she is today.
They will also highlight that Meta apps are free for users and face tough competition.
The FTC has argued that the strength of the meta monopoly is demonstrated by the consumer’s severely declining experience – with many advertising and product changes that consumers have no choice but to endure.
The market description
One of the major fields of room court will be how the FTC will explain the meta market.
The US government believes that Facebook and Instagram apps are the dominant players who provide a way to connect with family and friends, a category that does not contain trick and YouTube.
But Meta does not agree. A spokesman said, “Evidence of the trial will show what every 17 -year -old in the world knows: Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp compete with Chinese -owned Tacoes, YouTube, X, IMSEj and many others.”
“Meta as larger can make the relevant market […] “The FTC is more likely to be defeated,” lawyer Brendon Bendict said on Subsc.
