Cannes, France: Over the past fortnight, the capital of the fashion world has moved south from Paris to the Cannes Film Festival red carpet.
We give our take on some of the most stunning outfits at the world’s biggest film jamboree:
Tradition — and the requirements of French fashion houses — call for a jury member who can double as a clothes horse to walk the red carpet twice and sometimes three times a day for gala premieres.
Step forward 21-year-old American actress and model Elle Fanning.
She may be the baby of the jury, but “The Beguiled” star knows her art-house onion as a Cannes veteran who debuted at age seven in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Babel.”
She’s also no dozer when it comes to fashion, killing it on the red carpet in a series of stunning outfits culminating in a Dior ensemble that channeled the glamor of Grace Kelly’s 1950s look.
The slightly exaggerated silk organza draped blouse, A-line black tulle skirt and white-brimmed hat sat perfectly with Fanning’s knack for staying just on the right side of almost cartoonish glamour.
Fanning fainted in a “too-tight” Prada prom dress earlier this week, with only Colin “Mr. Darcy” Firth to help her up.
In a refreshingly candid touch, Fanning puts it on her “time of the month.”
New York Times guru Vanessa Friedman, a woman who is notoriously hard to impress, said: “If Elle Fanning doesn’t come in… with a next-level fashion ambassador contract, something in the celebrity-style industrial complex is going to take off.” It’s gone seriously wrong.”
Another nearly ubiquitous American was Chloe Sevigny, who graced the carpet for the fortnight despite an unsatisfying role in Jim Jarmusch’s opening-night zombie film “The Dead Don’t Die.”
It’s true that the indie queen attracted her fair share of snipes for her two-tone Mugler slash dress for her premiere.
It didn’t help that Selena Gomez was in the same lineup in an ivory silk Louis Vuitton bustier and skirt.
But Sevigny stayed true to her bold fashion line, with Miu Miu, Loewe and Black Beret going her own way with a very naughty off-duty look, before endorsing trendy Parisian designer Marine. could strengthen its avant-garde credentials. Sayre
No country graced the red carpet this year more than India, with a battalion of Bollywood and crossover actresses keeping the paparazzi very busy indeed.
None other than Deepika Padukone who delivered one of Cannes’ biggest fashion moments in an elaborately ruffled lime green Giambattista Valli tulle gown that was almost its own festival.
Priyanka Chopra, Diana Penty, Kangana Ranaut and Abdi Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also stopped traffic on Croisette in acid yellow sheath dresses.
While none of the major films were in Cannes, Huma Qureshi put designer Gaurav Gupta’s name in the spotlight in a ruffled, multi-layered gown that she told AFP was “dreamy” to wear.
“It’s almost like a silver flower,” she said. “He literally made it for me in four days.”
Cannes has become not only an alternative catwalk but also one of the biggest shop windows for top-end jewellers.
And no one wore the stones better than 21-year-old Argentinian actress Camila Moron, one of the big screen discoveries of the festival.
After wowing critics with her costumed lead role in the American indie film “Mickey and the Bear”, she turned up at the premiere of Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time…” to support her boyfriend Leonardo DiCaprio. A stunning Bulgari bib necklace was worn. In Hollywood”.
Singer Rita Ora also dazzled in another diamond necklace, although the courier who was supposed to bring it from London left it and other jewels worth 3.5 million euros ($4 million) behind on the flight. Thankfully the gems got there in the end.
