TV time
Although love affairs and marriages have dominated our TV screens since time immemorial, there is a constant debate as to why our dramas do not explore diverse themes and genres. Although there are many stories to tell, there is hardly a project (out of 100 television dramas) that revolves around medical or crime themes. However, with the success of last year’s drama serial Vwaaz which tackled the issue of child sexual exploitation, there has been a shift towards socially relevant dramas in the last few months (Khuda Mera Bhi Hai, Mera Kya Kasur Tha , vs., simi). Although this is a good move, the craze for social dramas is now running the risk of monotony.
Fortunately, there are a few new and upcoming dramas that touch on unique themes and aim to offer something different to the audience. Instep talks to some of the people who are part of these projects to learn more about them.
Khan
Topping our list is Geo TV’s upcoming drama Khan. Starring Nauman Ejaz in the lead role, the drama has become the talk of the town for portraying the life of controversial politician Imran Khan. However, this is not true as drama has nothing to do with it. In a chat with Instep, director Ali Faizan (Dhani Shahrat) shared, “There is no political background attached to Khan. It is about the journey of a person who is a Pathan, so the play is called Khan. His life, he understands the importance of power and then does everything to become powerful – a multi-layered character we have seen (after Bashar Momin). ) so it is an attempt that such plays should be brought back to television.
Khan revolves around the theme of power, among other issues. Apart from Nauman Ijaz, the drama also stars Aizaz Aslam, Atiqa Odhu (who plays his wife) and popular morning show host Shaista Lodhi, who will play his love interest in the drama. Khan will go on air later this month.
Chanar Ghati.
Another upcoming television drama that is ready to experiment with unique themes and characters is Chinnar Ghati. Directed and produced by Ghazanfar Ali, the drama is a suspense thriller and deals with two different eras.
“Channar Ghati revolves around the world of the supernatural,” VJ-turned-actor Anush Ashraf, who starred in the play, told Instep. “It’s a far cry from our regular serials and has elements of suspense and mystery. The drama is basically based on an incident that took place in the 1800s but its implications are evident even in 2017. connects to the modern era and presents two different eras.”
As for Anusha’s character, it has been created in modern times. A group of friends, including her, who work together, visit a village where this incident happened in the past. Chanar Ghati follows what they experience there and how it affects their lives.
Apart from Anusha, the drama features a host of actors including Ali Khan, Samia Mumtaz, Tipu Sharif, Shamail, former VJ Dino and Noori-to-musician Ali Noor. The drama will go on air this summer.
Simi
Starring Mawra Hussain as the titular character Simmi, the new drama serial Simmi is also looking promising and has the potential to become one of the most popular TV dramas of the season. The first episode of this drama aired last week managed to keep the audience completely engaged. The drama begins with Simmi’s wedding preparations, ends with her brother’s murder of her groom and her decision to force a marriage (Vani) with her potential father-in-law to settle the score. All the actors (Hakeen, Adnan Siddiqui, Rehan Shaikh, Noorul Hasan)’s brilliant performances kept the audience engrossed on their TV screens.
In a recent interview with Instep, the play’s director, Saifi Hassan, said, “Sami explores some social issues related to Punjab, Sindh and even some rural areas of KPK. Marriages, also known as Vani. Yes, there are a lot of events happening in the story and I believe the characterization and acting will make this drama different from other dramas. Usually the characters we get are village people, but it’s mainly rural In areas It’s about the people who live.”
Written by Noorul Hadi Shah, Sami also aims to highlight issues such as maternal and child health care and women’s ignorance of inheritance laws.
