KARACHI: Coach Brendon McCullum has supported Jose Butler to play a major role for England after standing as captain of the team after a disappointing campaign of the Champions Trophy.
England suffered a third straight defeat on Saturday, losing to South Africa by seven wickets after a lame display in Karachi so that Group B and without a single point. They have already been confirmed out, England came to 179 in 38.2 overs, which Root scored a top score of 37.
South Africa chased the target to lose three wickets in 29.1 overs as Rasi Van Dare Dawson added an unbeaten 72 and Heinich Klassen 64. England took five wickets against Australia before losing to Afghanistan by eight runs.
Butler Made starts in every three innings-scoring 82 runs-but could not copy the explosive form that made him the most frightened batsman in whiteball cricket.
England have lost their last seven ODIs, which has won only 18 of the 45 as Captain with Butler, but McCullum said the 34 -year -old was a key member of the team as needed to rebuild.
“We still see Jose as a big player inside him and has played a huge role,” said McCullum, who took over as the Whiteball coach of England.
“It will be an interesting time for a new captain to try to put his stamp on it.” Harry Brooke is a favorite for captaincy, which Butler has held in June 2022 since he was replaced by Avon Morgan.
McCullum said, “I thought it was a brave decision and now it gives us the opportunity to start planning and move on.” “He (Butler) cared for him and confessed that he was unable to take the best of the boys and was depressed.”
McCollum, which is a very aggressive monitoring of England’s transfer in Test cricket, said it was time to see now. He said, “We are not good enough, obviously there is a lot of disappointment, so now we will put our thinking hats and try to go on our way to improvement.”
“We need to work in such a way that we can return ourselves where we should be.” McCullum praised fast bowler Jofra Archer, who took six wickets in three matches in the tournament, when he showed his outstanding glimpse after a terrible road returning to international cricket.
“I think if we look at Jof, he has been out of competitive cricket for a few years (with injury), and I think it’s probably taken a little time to take back the gameplay rhythm.” Host the West Indies.
England coach Brendon McCullum says the team lacks confidence and that is why there is a disappointing result in the Champions Trophy. England is the only team that ended their three group stage matches without ending without point.
This is the third consecutive ICC tournament where three lions have won poorly after the One Day World Cup 2023 and the T20 World Cup 2024.
In the last group stage match on March 1, McCallum told the media after the loss from South Africa, “I think we lacked confidence and I thought today was another example of this.”
“We have to put our hands up and acknowledge that it was not good enough and it is fine in the game, if you haven’t played well, you will not be upset. Sometimes it doesn’t work and you have to wear as much as you can and try and keep moving.
