Miami: President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the United States had lost “sovereignty” after choosing New York leftist Zahran Mamdani as its next mayor.
“We’ll take care of it,” Trump said without saying what he meant, while claiming the nation’s largest city would go communist.
In a speech in Miami a day after Mamdani’s landslide victory, Trump added that the Florida city “will soon be a haven for those fleeing communism in New York.”
“The decision facing all Americans could not be clearer: We have a choice between communism and common sense,” he said, also presenting the choice between “an economic nightmare” and an “economic miracle.”
Trump added, “We want New York to succeed.
The speech marked the first anniversary of Trump’s election victory over Democrat Kamala Harris.
“We saved our economy, we reclaimed our freedom, and together we saved our country 365 days ago on that glorious night,” Trump told an audience of supporters.
Meanwhile, in an interview with Fox News anchor Brett Baier, Trump said Mamdani should find a new relationship with Washington, warning that the New York mayor has a lot to lose if he fails to cooperate.
The US president said he was willing to talk with Mamdani, but stressed that the new mayor needed to respect Washington.
Mamdani’s mayoral race victory came despite fierce attacks on his policies and his Muslim heritage from business elites, conservative media commentators and Trump himself.
“If anyone can show Donald Trump how to defeat a nation by cheating, it’s the city that gave birth to him.”
Mamdani’s win, along with other Democratic victories in gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, suggest a shift in the political mood as the country looks toward next year’s midterm elections, when Congress will be in control.
In another major win for Democrats, voters in California approved a proposal to redraw electoral districts to nullify efforts ordered by Trump in other states.
Trump declined to take any blame for Tuesday’s results.
In a post on his truth social network, he cited anonymous “pollsters” saying that the Republican defeats were due to the government shutdown and the fact that his own name was not on the ballot.
Defeating former Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo, the 34-year-old Democratic Socialist made history by becoming the first Muslim mayor of America’s largest city.
Earlier, Trump acknowledged that Democrats’ electoral gains signaled growing trouble for Republicans, calling the results “not good” and linking the setbacks to the record-long federal government shutdown, now in its sixth week.
Addressing GOP senators at a White House breakfast, Trump reflected on the results, saying it had not been a positive night for anyone.
The US president said: “We had an interesting evening, and we learned a lot, and we’re going to talk about it.”
He attributed the Republican setbacks in part to the prolonged government shutdown, finding pollsters to be “a big factor, a negative, for Republicans.” Trump added that some analysts considered his absence from the ballot to be the biggest factor.
Trump has accused Democrats of being out to destroy the country as the government shutdown on Wednesday became the longest in history, eclipsing the record of 35 days during the Republican leader’s first term.
Mamdani to Trump: ‘Turn up the volume’
Mamdani wasted no time calling out President Trump, officially launching the battle that will likely define the relationship between the 34-year-old mayor and the president whose celebrity is tied to the city.
“Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn up the volume!” Mamdani, a Democrat, said during a speech to a raucous crowd of supporters shortly after the winner was announced Tuesday night.
“If anyone can show how to defeat a nation by defrauding Donald Trump, it’s the city that gave birth to him.” “And if there’s any way to scare a dictator, it’s by eliminating the conditions that allow him to accumulate power. It’s not just how we stop Trump, it’s how we stop the next one.”
