We complain that the fashion and entertainment industries lack sincerity, everyone is out to get each other’s job, project, dress or husband but the level of camaraderie at the Chum Style Awards was ah.may.zing.
I was very impressed. I mean, I was blown away by the level of camaraderie I saw at the Chum Style Awards last weekend. The event held in Karachi really proved how close the industry really is. We complain that there is a lack of sincerity in the fashion and entertainment industries, everyone is out to get each other’s job, project, dress or husband but let me tell you what the level of brotherhood was at the Chum Style Awards. . .zing What more proof could one want than that everyone in the Chum family got an award, or should we say ‘chummies’. Whoever participated received an award. Everyone in the jury awarded each other. I was very impressed. Respect.
So there was some confusion over this year’s theme. Some said it was ‘retro’ but there was nothing about the event other than recycled outfits from last year. Did you see Tobah Siddiqui’s Omar Said saree that looked exactly like Mahira Jan’s Rizwan Bij saree?
Some people felt that the chums were celebrating Halloween the week before – and let me tell you some of the stars’ costumes were unforgettably scary – but at the end of the day I think the theme was terrestrial anthropods, because they There was a glowing yellow and black background. Made sure everyone looked like insects. Black people blended in, white people stood out and people with prints (especially floral prints) were the ideal wearers. I mean, Fanny Jaffrey even had her gown hand painted in flowers to make sure she fit in with Flora and Fauna.
I have to say that the black and yellow color palette confused me a bit. I mean, weren’t we taught in school that these colors stood for danger and yes, I have to admit things did look like a nuclear disaster site from time to time. That pretty Horan girl in red came in and my mind screamed “DANGER!” But I hesitate. The thing is, the Chum Style Awards were all about friendship and camaraderie.
I love that the underachievers were given a chance to shine. I mean Jibran Riaz, Shoaib Jan, MHM (who?) or Ashna Rojhan will have a chance over names like Abdullah Waris and Hasnain Zehri. Hasnain Zehri lost the best male model to Gibran Riaz, but then that’s just an incident. Brothers also fight. Let’s not make a big deal out of it.
Let’s not focus too much on the awards anyway. PSY was obviously going to win for Most Stylish Television Host but then they were so generous to give the award to Talwar’s Dhar Ali Abbasi as well. And Abbasi, who normally shuns all things fashion, actually accepted the award and celebrated it on social media. You’d think that’s the only reason he attended in the first place.
At the show starting at about 11 p.m. Maryam Qamar’s performance was not bad… she is a copycat after all and she is quite the rebel… just as she dug her heels in Mahira Jaan and Farhad Khan. Loved her courage. Also loved the fact that the Chum Style Awards let her, who is in the spotlight for her drama Baaji on a rival channel, take the spotlight. And she was so cool that she sang a song about how people like her become stars. Too bad the sound system was so bad that half the jokes fell on deaf ears.
Then Farzan Saeed pulled a Yasir Hussain. Something about cricketers and people being beautiful after coming to Pakistan. O.K. Was that a joke on Bhabhi? Then he repeatedly mispronounced the sponsor’s name: Creative Digestive Biscuits. In fact Fanny Kazmi was so good that I wondered why he wasn’t just made the host. But then I checked Fanny’s social media following. Compared to the three Hurin sisters, it was unnecessary. Did I say three?
Things got better. Asim Mazhar and Daira Shahroz dance was really energetic. Modern, fast and fluid. Too bad there weren’t more of them.
We got more from Sahib Malik, who inexplicably went to pick up Meena Shafi’s award for Most Stylish Female Performer. It was weird, even I have to admit. “Well, I’ve never met her,” he said, “but I’m sure she’d be really happy.” Dude, why did you need to go get his award? But then it was the Chum Style Awards and everyone had a chance. You just have to admire their sense of fair play. love it.
