It is safe to say that Jawani Phir Nahi Aani has become the most popular offering of the Pakistani film industry even before its release, and we can say, for all the wrong reasons. On one side is Hamza Ali Abbasi, one of the film’s leading cast members, who is personally bent on severing all ties to the film and its publicity campaigns (often perceived as spurious sexist reasons). And on the other hand there are numerous claims that the film is clichéd and blatantly spoofing films like Hangover and Masti. Blame games seem to be the core of JPNA’s current existence and the music isn’t providing much relief either. However, just as most of us do not agree with the awkward dance of ‘Fair and Lovely Ka Jalwa’, writer Wasay Chaudhary also disagrees with the allegations of plagiarism and lack of originality.
“When the teaser came out, people compared it to The Hangover. Now that the trailer is out, everyone is complaining that it looks like Masti and Grand Masti. I really wish they were like that. Before concluding the film, Vasse spoke to Instep on the set of JPNA’s final song, saying, “This is not the first time I have written a script. I’ve been doing this on television for 15 years. I have written a lot including the entire ‘Baaraat’ series. Were there any humorous references? Or jokes that belong in this type of humor. I have never come across this kind of humor and I haven’t done anything like this in 15 years when I had ample opportunity to do it? It’s at this stage of my career?”
He added, “At least one should consider the names attached to the project – be it me or director Nadeem Baig – and see what kind of work they are associated with. People should do research before writing such things.” need.”
In the media’s defense, the trailer portrays the film as a typical comedy of husbands, tied by their wives’ apron strings, trying to break free from their plight – a story that We are all very familiar with it. However, in the case of JPNA, the indiscretion in the portrayal of husbands is only part of the problem which may actually be a misunderstanding. The biggest controversy is the women in the film – whose entire existence is somehow tied to their bikini choices. Rather, those whose promiscuity seems to question the real-life morality of the men involved in the film. While pleading innocence, Vasse pointed out the lack of common sense that these women of Western descent could not wear pajamas on the beach.
“There are six songs in the film and out of those six this is only one song. And in that one song there are four locations where the song is shot and only one of those four locations is a beach where the women are seen wearing bikinis. Well, obviously she can’t wear gharara or pajamas while on the beach, so it’s not a song, it’s just a song. In fact, we didn’t even know there was going to be a sequence like ‘The One.’ Is – until then Not until we got to the location and were getting ready to shoot the song,” Vasse clarified. “If I were the director, I would have fired him. I was also not in favor of Mathera’s item number in Shahid Afridi’s Main Hoon Main, but that is the director’s discretion. The response to Mathira’s song forced the director not to participate in it. Now with the response this film’s item number has received, I’m sure the third film won’t be a part of it either.
Vasse further points out that one cannot restrict creative freedom or control the way one’s mind thinks. A director has every right to add whatever material he feels will do justice to the subject of the film or makes better sense – for example ‘commentary’. If the film is a crime caper, the director can certainly add interjections to a dialogue as you would expect a gangster to speak in any other language. So if the mindset of the Pakistani public “demands” that a certain scene should not be shown on the screen. Then is it more responsibility of the director or the censor board? Waseer blamed the latter.
“We individually play our role but the Censor Board also has a responsibility to fulfill it. Just like we have the police to curb crime. Yes, the Censor Board also needs to be a vigilant and aggressive authority. They are not doing their job properly Censoring Indian films other than being religiously or nationally controversial?” Questions from Wasee
The role of the censor board is a dilemma that needs to be sorted out, but so is the social mindset of a celebrity, and by that we mean many media statements that are more socially responsible and less politically correct. But needs to be wrong. If a song only needs to be edited based on the look of an actress – not in this case the actor’s luscious floral short, or sherwani – then why allow all ‘Sheelas’, ‘Minis’ and ‘Meri’ to be allowed? given To let loose without too much scrutiny. And if criticizing a Bollywood actress is so sexist, then why is our ‘Bally’ being discriminated against? This is as much a failed case of explaining the moral as it is a conflict of identity. For now, more controversies are being spent on promoting the film and only after its release will the curious know where it takes its inspiration from or even does.
