SEOUL: A top K-pop star wrote in a suicide note that he was “broken inside” and “wracked” by depression, it emerged on Tuesday as his death drew worldwide attention. The fans were shocked.
Kim Jong-hyun, the 27-year-old lead singer of the hugely popular K-pop boy band SHINee, was found dead in a hotel room in Seoul, South Korea, by police.
A charcoal briquette was burning on the wok — a common method of suicide in South Korea, a highly competitive society with one of the world’s highest suicide rates.
Kim’s close friend, musician Nine 9, released a suicide note on his Instagram account, saying that he had asked to publish the message in the event of her death.
“I’m broken inside. The depression that slowly crept up on me eventually took over,” he said, adding that he “couldn’t beat it anymore”.
“I was very lonely,” he continued. “The process of termination is difficult. I have survived until now because of this difficulty.”
“Please tell me I’ve done a good job,” she said, ending the note: “You’ve worked so hard. You’ve really been through a lot. Goodbye.”
Five-member SHINee debuted in 2008 and went on to spearhead the “Korean Wave” that saw South Korean pop culture build a fan base across Asia and beyond.
Known for peppy songs and carefully choreographed dance numbers performed with military precision, SHINee has become one of the world’s most popular K-pop acts.
The band has released five albums that have topped the charts at home and abroad, some of them reaching No. 1 on the US Billboard World Albums chart.
Kim was seen as a model K-pop celebrity, boasting impeccable singing and dancing skills and rarely making headlines for the romantic relationships, alcoholism or drug use that many other artists have faced. Derailed his career.
He released his first solo album in 2015, which topped the Billboard World Albums chart, and just last week performed in solo concerts in Seoul.
K-pop stars go through cut-throat competition and years of rigorous training at the hands of their agents, who dictate everything from music styles to diet and even cell phone use.
Many people are also pressured to project a clean and healthy image at all times.
In 2009, a master’s thesis by a prominent Seoul actress stated that 40 percent of actors or actresses had considered suicide at least once due to lack of privacy, online bullying or unstable income.
Hundreds of tearful Kim fans paid their respects at the funeral altar at the Seoul hospital where his body lay.
19-year-old Jung Min-kyung said, “I came here to say my last goodbye… because apparently we fans couldn’t be there for him when he needed us the most.”
“I think our country has a lot of expectations from celebrities,” he added.
Social media was flooded with thousands of messages of mourning, with pictures showing crowds of mourners near a makeshift memorial outside the Korean embassy in Santiago, Chile.
Many other K-pop stars in the stable of SHINee’s agents, SM Entertainment — which dominates K-pop — canceled public appearances to visit a mourning altar in Seoul.
Kim’s funeral will be held on Thursday, the firm said in a statement, adding: “The other members of SHINee, as well as other artists from our company, are mourning her death amid deep sorrow and shock.”
Seoul police said it seemed “certain” that Kim’s death was a suicide, adding that they planned to close the case without an autopsy as requested by her family.
He was declared brought dead soon after being shifted to the hospital.
Authorities were alerted by his sister, after he sent her text messages that read: “This is my last goodbye” and “Please let me go and say I did well.”
