ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Wednesday announced a 48-hour ceasefire agreement with the Afghan Taliban government following Kabul’s request.
“At the request of the Afghan Taliban government, and with mutual consent, Pakistan and the Taliban have agreed to a temporary ceasefire for 48 hours from 6pm today,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.
During this period, the FO said, the two sides will engage in constructive dialogue aimed at finding a “positive and lasting resolution” to the issue.
According to security sources, the development comes shortly after the Pakistan Army launched a health strike against key Taliban positions in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, successfully destroying several strongholds in response to a recent offensive.
According to sources, these operations targeted Taliban Battalion No. 4 and Border Brigade No. 6, both of which were completely destroyed during the strikes. Sources confirmed that these attacks resulted in the deaths of dozens of Taliban militants and foreign workers.
Security sources emphasized that the Pakistan Army has the full capability to respond effectively to any external aggression and will continue to protect the national borders with strength and determination.
‘state of panic’
Meanwhile, security sources said that strong and decisive retaliatory attacks by the Pakistan Army have left the Afghan Taliban in a state of panic.
According to sources, the defeated Taliban, after suffering heavy human and material losses, have been forced to resort to false propaganda to cover up their failures.
Security sources added that a Taliban spokesperson shared a propaganda post on social media in a failed attempt to spread misinformation. He said that Pakistan’s recent actions have targeted the leadership of Fitna-ul-Hindstan in Kabul.
Sources said that in the video shared online, the impression was given that the T-55 tank was captured from the Pakistan Army. However, he clarified that the Russian-made T-55 tanks shown in the footage were, in fact, operated by the Afghan Taliban themselves.
Security sources added that the Pakistan Armed Forces successfully repulsed the Taliban aggression with full effect and remained steadfast in the defense of the motherland despite the group’s false propaganda.
Infiltration bidding
Simultaneously, the militants tried to infiltrate into Pakistan in the Turkmenzai border region in Muhammad district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Sources said that the purpose of the infiltration attempt was to initiate terrorist activities inside Pakistan.
Security sources further revealed that a timely and forceful response by Pakistani forces thwarted the plot, forcing the Afghan Taliban to rely on elements of Fitna al-Kharj to continue their operations.
Sources further said that a large formation was completely neutralized from across the border, where at least 30 militants were killed.
Sources reiterated that the Pakistan Army is fully capable of responding to any external aggression. The operation is still ongoing, with reports suggesting more militant casualties.
‘Taliban killed’
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said security forces have successfully foiled an unprovoked attack launched by the Afghan Taliban in the Spinboldak area of Balochistan in the early hours of October 15.
The statement added that the Afghan Taliban also destroyed the Pak-Afghan friendship gate on their behalf, which the ISPR said clearly shows the mentality of the divided tribes regarding mutual trade and easement rights.
While repulsing the attack, 15-20 Afghan Taliban were killed and many were injured, ISPR said.
It added, “The situation is still developing. There are reports of further preparations in Fitna al-Kharj and Afghan Taliban staging points.”
The ISPR added that the Spinboldak incident was not isolated, noting that on the night of October 14 and 15, the Afghan Taliban and Fitna al-Kharj attempted to attack Pakistani border posts in the Karam sector in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The army’s media wing says the attacks were effectively repulsed, causing heavy damage to Afghan posts.
“Eight [Afghan] The posts, including six tanks, were destroyed in an effective but proportionate response by Pakistani troops. The statement added that 25-30 Afghan Taliban and Fitna al-Kharj fighters have been killed.
High tension
Against the backdrop of increasing terrorist attacks in Pakistan, the reluctance of the interim Afghan government to act against terrorist groups is being witnessed.
Since the return of Taliban rule to Afghanistan in 2021, particularly in the bordering provinces of KP and Balochistan, the country has witnessed an increase in cross-border terrorist incidents.
The two countries share an unsecured border that spans nearly 2,500 km with several crossing points that are important as a key factor in regional trade and a key element in the relationship between people on both sides of the fence.
However, the issue of terrorism remains a major issue for Pakistan, which has urged Afghanistan to prevent its territory from being attacked by groups like the TTP inside the former territory.
Islamabad’s concerns are also confirmed by a report submitted to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) by the Analytical Cooperation and Sanctions Monitoring Team, which revealed a nexus between Kabul and the TTP, with the former providing logistical, operational, and financial support to the latter.
Pakistan has hosted Afghans for more than four decades since the Soviet invasion in 2021 through the Taliban takeover. Some refugees were born and brought up in Pakistan. Others are still awaiting relocation to a third country.
According to media reports, more than 554,000 Afghans have been repatriated since April 2025 under Pakistan’s illegal alien repatriation plan, following a 2023 crackdown on undocumented Afghans and illegal aliens.
