Rawalpindi/Islamabad/Lahore: Several major roads in Rawalpindi and Islamabad were partially reopened on Sunday when protests from the Tahrik Labbic Pakistan (TLP) continued their move towards the capital from Lahore.
Although the shipping containers are sealed on key routes, authorities have begun removing the blockade in some parts of the twin cities to reduce the movement of passengers.
The twin cities have been in a partial lockdown since Friday when the TLP demanded a march to Islamabad for solidarity with the Palestinians.
Mobile internet services were also partially restored in parts of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, officials said.
Rawalpindi Traffic Police has issued a new project on road routes. Of the 43 blocks of the city, according to Rawalpindi Traffic Police, six have been fully reopened while 35 have been partially cleaned. Faizabad is completely closed for the third consecutive day.
In Rawalpindi, roads leading to residential areas and roads adjacent to Murray Road were reopened for traffic, while large highways, including Marri Road, Faizabad, Expressway, and IJP Road, are closed. Metro bus service between Rawalpindi and Islamabad is also suspended for further notice.
Motorway police confirmed that the M -2 motorway from Lahore to Islamabad has been reopened, and traffic flow is normal. The route connecting the Islamabad Expressway and the ninth Avenue to the Double Road has also been partially reopened, though the path to Faizabad is blocked by Rawalpindi.
Islamabad Khodam Mohammad Jawad Tariq visited Faizabad to assess the law and order situation, and assured that security and order in the capital would be “maintained at all costs.”
Traffic police have announced various points of several points near Faizabad. Heavy traffic entry has been suspended in Islamabad, with alternative routes consulting: Motor riders from Rawalpindi to Rawalpindi are advised to use Park Road, while those who go to the airport should use Kashmir Chowk and Srinagar Highway.
Residents of I-8 have been instructed to use Zero Point, Srinagar Highway, Club Road, and Park Road, while those coming from Coral should choose Khanna Bridge, Lehter Road, Tramri Chowk and Rawal Dam Chowk.
According to DIG Operations Faisal Kamran, in Lahore, violent clashes between TLP protesters and police injured 112 personnel and caused more than 100 protesters to arrest. According to reports, the protesters also vandalized at the Shahidra Town police station and damaged public and private property.
Talks between the Government, TLP
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Jamat -e -Islami (G) leader Liakat Baloch telephoned senior Punjab Minister Maryam Aurangzeb.
According to a JI spokesman, the two leaders discussed issues related to the ongoing TLP March and its impact on its province.
During a telephonic conversation, Liakat Baloch called on the provincial government to start talking to the protesters so that they could resolve the situation peacefully.
A TLP spokesman said talks were underway between the Central Committee and the Federal Government. He added that all workers were advised to wait for the central leadership decision.
Sources said that Rana Sanaullah, Khwaja Salman Rafiq, and Tahir Ashrafi are guiding the talks by the government.
He said that the two sides have pursued some issues, while others are in talks.
The Minister of State for Home Affairs had earlier said that the government was pursuing a peaceful resolution, but TLP would not be blackmailed by the mob, accusing the TLP of exploiting sensitive issues for political benefits.
