Cebu: At least eight people lost their lives when a powerful 6.9-earthly earthquake shook the central Philippines at the end of Tuesday, and buildings fell on the island of Sibo, with officials fearing that overnight comfortable working tools could increase.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake landed at the northern end of the island near Bogo, a city of 90,000 people, was attacked at 9:50 pm (1359 GMT).

Referring to the ongoing rescue efforts in San Remagio and Bogo, Provincial Rescue official Wilson Ramos told AFP, “People can be trapped under demolished buildings.” He said he did not know how many people were missing.

The provincial government of Sibo has reported that a commercial building and a school have fallen in Bantian, while a fast food restaurant in Bogo has been greatly damaged.
In a direct video message on his official Facebook account, Sibo’s provincial governor Pamela Minnotro urged the residents to “stay calm and move to the open areas. The walls or structures that could fall and be vigilant for aftershocks.”
He said the provincial government was reviewing the situation and reaching the municipal officials.
The USGS had reported the magnitude of 7.0 before reviewing it, while the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no danger of tsunami from the earthquake.
