Qureshi was fighting for health complications. What started as a weak eye disorder, it eventually eliminated his extraordinary memory and restricted it to a sick bed. Rotate in political struggle
Qureshi’s political journey began in his student days when he joined the National Students Federation. From the very beginning, he linked himself with progressive reasons, and established an identity as a compromised lawyer for democracy and social justice.
His hobby soon received a view of journalism. Over the years, he worked in various characters in various newspapers, especially as the Chief Reporter and later as the editor of the PPP official Daily Mystery. At a time when the press was strictly monitored, Qureshi’s responsibility became a brave voice of resistance, which formed a public conversation during some of the most critical places in Pakistan’s history.
Qureshi’s life stood at the intersection of political resistance and journalistic courage. These features made it equal measures and controversial.
As a political administrator and a journalist, his reputation gained him the confidence of PPP’s top leadership. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto appointed him his adviser to the students’ affairs, in which the Qureshi Party and Pakistan’s growing youth movement became an important link. Later, he also served as PPP’s Punjab Bob Information Secretary. During Benazir Bhutto’s Prime Minister’s ship, he served as his adviser in Punjab and as the President of PPP Studies Circle. Their intellectual depth and their organizational capabilities are acknowledged in both positions.
Dare to speak
Speaking exclusively to the news on Sunday, PPP Punjab general secretary Syed Hassan Murtaza said: “Altaf Ahmad Qureshi surpassed a significant legacy during five decades of political work and journalism. His death indicates the end of a period.”
He added that Qureshi’s life is a symbol of political resistance and journalistic courage. These features made it both praise and controversial.
Ahsan Rizvi, a member of the PPP Punjab Executive, echoed the sentiment. Talking to the TNS, he said: “Altaf Qureshi did not need any introduction. He never abandoned the Bhutto family and was loyal to his last breath. Regardless of how much challenge the situation became, he challenged the establishment with pride. He continued his struggle in old age.”
Break the big story
Qureshi was the first to break the news of the US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in July 1971. The visit was a firmly guarded secret.
Majid Nizami will later remember that Qureshi had combined the scope together through the reporting of intuitive, street level reporting and sheer nerves. While the government briefing states that Kissinger is resting in Abbottabad, Qureshi was suspected otherwise. He quietly confirmed the details from unconventional sources – including a sweeping to Islamabad airport whether the US diplomat had passed through the VIP lounge.
Once he was convinced of the truth of the story, he ignored his editor and changed the headline in the printing press of Mousut. The BBC’s Mark Toll initially rejected the report, just to run the item given to Qureshi only. Masawat suspended him from the service to be unusual, but soon the report was recognized as the largest scope of the year.
Loyal with the last
Throughout his career, Altaf Qureshi combined his intellectual hardship with his loyalty. He never pledged allegiance to the PPP or the Bhutto family.
Ahsan Rizvi reminded, “He was the first person who demanded that the army chief should go to Bhutto’s grave and apologize.
