Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Monday inaugurated a 10 million digital wallet for the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), which described the move as a historic move toward transparency, financial inclusion, and transfer to Pakistan’s cashless economy.
With the contact of the symbolic palm, the Prime Minister inaugurated the system in the presence of federal ministers, BISP leadership, and international partners, including Gaez.
He congratulated BISP Chairperson Senator Rubina Khalid, the program team, and partners’ congratulations for the historic decision that will protect the real recipients and protect them from inappropriate problems.
Prime Minister Shahbaz said, “The digital wallet system, in its true sense, is blessed with the spirit of Shaheed Mehtarma Benazir Bhutto, as it empowers BISP beneficiaries with direct access to safe, transparent and financial support.”
He emphasized that the BISP “is a great step for poverty alleviation and employment production”, but emphasized that constant efforts are needed to enhance its effects.
The Prime Minister termed the launch as a “great leap towards the cashless economy”.
He reminded that during Ramadan, 78 % of aid package was successfully divided by digital channels successfully, despite doubts and avoiding their interests.
He remarked, “Cashless transactions are the urgent need for our times. They save time, eliminate corruption and bring performance, which helps Pakistan in rapid development.”
The Prime Minister revealed that he chaired several meetings on digitalization despite the initial “indifferent attitudes and anger” on the matter, which identified the government’s commitment to transform the government, business to business, and personal transactions into digital channels.
Prime Minister Shahbaz called on the BISP leadership to integrate education and health conditions in the program.
“If a family is helping, it should be linked to the condition that all children in this house go to school. Similarly, health measures should be tied up with BISP support.
“Then the program will become a real heritage to benefit millions of children,” he said, demanding that the current eight to ten months of implementation be reduced for just four months.
The Prime Minister ended the tribute to all stakeholders, State Bank of Pakistan, IT Ministry, Pakistani banks, and development partners for their contribution.
“We are not just providing aid, we are raising an army of architects and workers to build the nation,” he said.
Earlier, BISP Federal Secretary Amir Ali Ahmed gave a briefing that under the Prime Minister’s directive, a high level committee has been constituted to ensure transparency and access to the digital system.
“After today’s start, 10 million digital wallets will be developed using CNIC of beneficiaries, which has been identified by the biometric verification system to prevent theft of identity,” he said.
He added that 10 million free SIM cards will also be distributed, the first phase of which is already going on in collaboration with a cellular company in Hyderabad, Score, and Rahim Yar Khan.
The BISP Chairperson described the launch as an “important and historic milestone” in Pakistan’s social protection journey.
“This program, which supports more than 10 million poor families, is not just financial support, it is a way to empower social and economic,” he said.
She said that connecting the benefits of women’s CNIC gives them recognition and involvement in the national database.
He added that new wallets will “open more opportunities” and be unaware of technology with the help of digital literacy programs for women benefiting.
Senator Rubina highlighted that the vision of BISP Benzier is a continuation of empowering women, which has been pushed forward by President Asif Ali Zardari and is now “more performance under the leadership of Prime Minister Sherbaz Sharif”.
