With very little notice, Donald Trump attracted European leaders and Ukraine’s Wolodmeer Zelinski in the White House on Monday for high -steak dialogue on ways to stop the Russian war.
The routes obtained from negotiations are:
Hot tone, small substance
Seven European leaders, the president of Ukraine, his motorcycle, dozens of Trump administration staff and more than 100 journalists were compatible with the White House campus on Monday.
Will Trump and Zillsky agree on the path of peace? Or will their latest Oval Office session turn into a bitter quarrel like February?
Nor did any scene happen. Zilnski prepared his appearance and style in February, adjusting both. Wearing more formal clothing and repeatedly thanked Trump, he was welcomed by more honorary US president than in the past.
But, despite Trump’s commitment to help Ukraine’s security after a fictitious peace deal, no immediate indication has been that any party has changed positions on ground conversion, security guarantees or sanctions.
Instead, Trump eliminated promises to host the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin so that many other issues could be resolved.
Appreciation of praise
“Have you once said ‘thank you’?” US Vice President JD Venus asked Zilnski in February, accusing him of failed to thank US support.
On Monday, Zilnsky made sure that this was not a problem. His opening remarks were given eight thanks to the Oval Office, mostly for Trump.
“Thank you very much, Mr. President … Thank you for your attention. Thank you very much for your efforts, preventing killing and preventing this war. Thank you.”
She added to the American woman, who sent a letter to Putin about the kidnapped children in Ukraine.
The president of Ukraine said, “Using this opportunity, thank you for your wife.”
“And thank all our partners and that you supported this format. And after our meeting, the leaders around us, the UK and France are coming to Germany … All the partners around Ukraine are helping us. Thank them (their) thanks.
Unlike February, Venus remained widely silent this time.
Fighting formal
The stream of the meeting could not be high. But one of the most questioning questions in the diplomat in DC could not have been more serious: Will the president of Ukraine wear a case?
Answer: Type.
Zlinski showed in the White House in which a European diplomat described as “almost a suit”. Its black jacket had small lapels and chest pockets jets. He didn’t wear a tie. Its dress, which divides the difference between the battlefield and the boardroom, can be termed as a war formal.
When it comes to dealing with the US president, these sortial details are important, which was worried that Zillsky did not wear a February meeting case.
However, Zillsky passed the fashion test this time.
When a journalist at the Oval Office said Zillsky looked “amazing”, Trump agreed.
“I said the same,” Trump told reporters.
Divide on ceasefire
The European leaders, Zelannsky, were also included, cautious about paper voting over policy differences with Trump, keeping their comments vague and greatly appreciated by the US president.
But one point of disagreement bubbles at the level.
German Chancellor Frederick Mirz told the gathering leaders and the media that he would like to see Putin agreeing with a ceasefire.
Trump has long called for a ceasefire in Ukraine. But after meeting Putin in Alaska last week, the goal was widespread, a change that was widely seen as a diplomatic defeat for Ukraine. The US president now says he is right in an attempt to go to a peace deal.
Mirz said, “If you tell the truth, we will all want to see a ceasefire.” I can’t imagine that the next meeting would be without a ceasefire, so let’s work on it. “
Trump withdrew, said he had resolved a lot of conflicts without reaching the first ceasefire.
Whose shoes are on the ground?
One of the great mysteries that was hanging at this summit was what the United States would help to make any Russian-Ukrainian deal a long-term safer.
Trump has not offered us “shoes on the ground” to guarantee Ukraine’s security from Russia, which reflects on a military confusion or a confrontation with nuclear power.
Instead, he has offered arms sales and promised that the Americans will do business in Ukraine, assuring that Ukraine people look less than security guarantee. European residents are preparing a peace mission with the help of their forces.
Nevertheless, it was clearly asked if US security guarantees for Ukraine could include US troops in the country, Trump did not reject it. Instead, he made an announcement on the topic with Monday.
Trump said, “We will tell you that, maybe today, today,” Trump said. He said that Europe is the “first line of defense” but they “we will join it.”
What is the next
Trump said he would call Putin and set up a trilateral meeting with Ukraine at a time and place.
Despite some private misconduct, the leaders agreed that such a meeting was a logical next step.
Nevertheless, the path forward is far more complicated than Trump and his allies.
On the one hand, Russia has delayed and obstructed high -level meetings with Ukraine in the past, and it was not immediately clear that Putin would sit with Zilnsky, which he often describes as an illicit leader.
In addition, it is unclear whether a principal level meeting will really move forward with the cause of peace.
The gulf between Russian and Ukrainian positions is very wide.
The Kremlin said on Monday that the presence of NATO troops in Ukraine is a non -starter, a stand that will be difficult for Ukraine to swallow.
Russia has also called on Ukraine to fork the key parts of the region that Kiev has controlled, another suggestion that Ukrainian leaders are not entertaining.
