WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was deploying 800 National Guard troops to the US capital and was putting the Washington department under federal control to fight them to fight them, yet it appears that violent crime is 30 years in 2024.
Trump told reporters in the White House, “I am deploying a National Guard to help re -establish law, order and public safety in Washington DC,” said Trump, including Secretary of Defense Pate Hegisit and Attorney General Palm Bondi, in the White House. “The city of our capital has withdrawn due to violent groups and bloody criminals.”
Trump’s announcement is traditionally his latest attempt to target democratically operated cities by using executive power on local issues, and has shown a particular interest in emphasizing more control over Washington.
The Republican president has rejected the criticism that he is preparing a crisis to justify expanding the presidential authority in a heavy democratic city.
More than a dozen officers and agents of more than a dozen federal agencies, including the FBI, Ice, DEA and ATF, have been humbled throughout the city in recent days.
Trump said he would send “if needed” to the US military, and Hegsit said he was ready to call additional soldiers of the National Guard from outside Washington. Trump said the Bondi would oversee the occupation of the police force.
In his announcement, Trump described Washington as a hell of bloody criminals and unidentified violence.
Washington’s Democratic Mayor, Moriel Baiser, has back on Trump’s claims, saying the city is “not facing any crimes” and highlighting that violent crimes have targeted its lower levels over three decades last year.
According to the city police department, violent crime decreased by 26 % in the first seven months of 2025 after falling 35 % in 2024, and overall crime decreased by 7 %.
Trump promoted rhetoric
Last week, Trump has intensified his messaging, and has suggested that he could try to snatch his local sovereignty and implement a complete federal occupation.
The Columbia district, founded in 1790, works under the Home Roll Act, which gives the Congress a final authority but allows residents to choose the mayor and the City Council. Trump said last week that lawyers are examining how to abolish the law, the move will require Congress to be banned.
Special terms
In handling the Metropolitan Police Department, Trump requested a section of the Act, which facilitates the president to temporarily use the force when “emergency special terms” are present. Trump said he was announcing a “public security emergency” in the city.
Trump’s own Federal Emergency Management Agency is reducing security funds for the region of the national capital, which includes Maryland and Virginia’s DC and nearby cities. This year, the region will get $ 20 million less than the Federal Urban Security Fund, which is 44 % deducted a year.
The deployment of the National Guard forces is a tactic used in President Los Angeles, where he sent 5,000 troops in June in response to his administration’s immigration raids. State and local officials objected to Trump’s decision as unnecessary and inflammation.
A federal trial was launched in San Francisco on Monday whether the Trump administration violated US law by deploying National Guard troops and US Marines without the approval of Democratic Governor Gwen Newsom.
The President has a broader authority over 2,700 members of the DC National Guard, unlike states where governors generally have the power to activate the army. Guard soldiers have been deported several times, including a crowd of Trump supporters on January 6, 2021, in response to an attack on the US capital.
During his first term as president, Trump sent the National Guard to Washington in 2020 to end most peaceful protests during a nationwide protest on the brutality of police after George Flied’s assassination. Civil rights leaders condemned the deployment, which Baisar opposed.
The US military is usually forbidden to participate directly in domestic law enforcement activities.
Since the 1980s, Trump has used crimes of youth, especially in cities, as a political tool. In the Central Park Jogger case, he was demanded for the death sentence in 1989, which later gives apology for the five black and Latin teenage abuses and defeat a woman, is among the controversial moments in her public life.
“Central Park Five” lies in a false saying during a presidential debate last year that he has requested the culprit.
