Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a US broken peace deal during a meeting with US President Donald Trump on Friday, which will promote bilateral economic relations after decades of conflict.
This agreement between rivals in the South Caucasus – assuming that it has – it will be an important achievement for the Trump administration that believes in accelerating Moscow, which sees the region in its influence.
“It’s a long time – 35 years – he fights and is now friends, and he will become friends for a long time,” Trump said in a signature ceremony in the White House, where he was seen by Azerbaijan President Alham Alev and Armenian Prime Minister Nicole Pushinian.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been in trouble since the late 1980s when a mountainous Azerbaijani region was separated from Azerbaijan with the support of Armenia, which was mostly settled by ethnic Armenians. Azerbaijan withdrew full control of the region in 2023, indicating about 100,000 ethnic Armenian residents of all the region to flee Armenia.
Trump said the two countries have pledged to stop fighting, open diplomatic relations and respect each other’s territorial integrity.
The agreement includes special rights rights rights for the Strategic Transit Corridor through the South Caucasus, which the White House has said will facilitate more energy and other resources.
Trump said the United States signed separate deals with each country to enhance cooperation on energy, trade and technology, including artificial intelligence.
He said that sanctions on defense cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United States were also lifted.
The two leaders praised Trump for helping end the conflict, saying he would nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. “So, who, if not President Trump, deserve the Nobel Peace Prize?” Aliyev said.
In the first months of his second term, Trump has tried to present himself as a world peace maker. The White House has given it a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand and the Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and sealing peace between Pakistan and India.
However, he has not been able to end the Russian war with Hamas in Ukraine or Israeli Gaza.
US officials said the deal was abolished during the region’s repeated arrival, and they would provide the basis for a complete routine between the countries.
Senior officials of the administration told reporters that the deal had ended the first frozen conflict over Russia’s scope since the end of the Cold War, saying it would send a powerful signal to the entire region.
The peace deal can change the southern Caucasus, which is an energy -producing area that is born in a region of neighboring Russia, Europe, Turkey and Iran that crosses with oil and gas pipelines, but is confronted by closed borders and long -standing ethnic conflicts.
Administration officials told Reuters this week that the Armenia intends to provide special development rights for the expansion of the Armenia Transit Corridor. An official said on condition of anonymity that the so -called Trump route for international peace and prosperity has created an interest in nine companies, including three US firms.
With Washington -based rights group Freedom Now, Defan Panoteos said it has called on the Trump administration to use a meeting with Alif to demand the release of some 375 political prisoners held in the country.
Azerbaijan, a oil -producing country, hosting the UN climate summit last November, rejected Western criticism of its human rights record, calling it an unacceptable intervention.
