US President Donald Trump has recently nominated Israeli Prime Minister Nobel Peace Prize Benjamin Netanyahu for the Nobel Peace Prize.
In his letter to the Nobel Committee, which he shared online, Netanyahu said that Trump has “shown steadfastness and extraordinary dedication to promote peace, security and stability around the world.” Trump, who is trying to broker the ceasefire in the Middle East, has also been nominated before.
Pakistan had said in June that it would recommend a reward for his work to help Trump resolve the dispute between India and Pakistan.
Prime Minister Netanyahu’s Trump’s nomination has raised doubts in some constituencies, including former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bloodtt, who said Netanyahu was trying to flatter Trump.
If Trump won the award, he will be the fifth US president, after theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama.
Take a look at how the award works:
The quality of eligibility
According to the inventor of the Dynamite, Swedish industrialist Alfred Noble, the prize should go to the person “who has performed the most or best for the establishment and promotion of peace Congress, the elimination or reduction of the standing forces among the nations.” All residents or active organizations are eligible.
In an introduction to the Nobel website, the chair of the Peace Prize Committee George Watin Friends says that “practically anyone can be the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. The date of the award clearly shows that it has been given to people from all layers of society from all over the world.”
Nobel rewards are announced every year in October, but the nominations are closed last January, which means that Netanyahu’s Trump’s nomination cannot be considered this year.
Nomination
Thousands of people can suggest names: governments and members of parliament; The current heads of the state; Professors of University history, social studies, law, and philosophy. And the former Nobel Peace Prize, among others. You can’t nominate yourself.
The nominees are kept secret for 50 years, though there is nothing to stop those who make nominations.
How is the winner lifted?
The Norwegian Nobel Committee, comprised of five persons appointed by the Norwegian parliament, is mediation. Members are often retired politicians, but not always. The current committee is led by a group, head of the Norwegian branch of Pen International, who defends freedom of expression.
All of them have been presented by the Norwegian political parties and their appointments have reflected the balance of power in the Norwegian parliament.
The first meeting of the committee is held in February every year, when members of the committee can nominate their nominations to be included in the list.
Last year, there were 286 nominees, and in 2025, 338 candidates have been nominated for award – 244 people and 94 organizations.
The committee eliminates nominations to make a shortlist, and then each nominee is estimated by a group of permanent advisers and other experts.
The purpose of the committee is a consensus but can decide through the majority vote. A final decision is often made just a few days before the announcement of the award.
Controversial political actor
The Nobel Peace Prize is often seen as a political message. The Nobel website states that some recipients have been a “most controversial political actor”, while the award has also increased public focus on international or national disputes.
Obama won the award just a few months after taking office. Two members of the committee dismissed US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Vietnamese politician Lee Dok in 1973 on the decision to give a peace prize to end the Vietnam War.
A member left in 1994 when Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat shared the award with Israeli Simon Perez and Yazak Robin.
