Leaders of the BRICS Group of Development Countries condemned the attacks on Iran, Gaza and Kashmir during their summit on Sunday, in which the block was described as the champion of multilateral diplomacy, while indirectly criticized US military measures and trade policies.
Since platforms like the G7 and G20 are weakened by internal divisions and US President Donald Trump’s “America First” stance, the expansion of BRICS has created new opportunities for diplomatic cooperation.
In his initial address at the summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian President Louise Ensev Lola Da Silva described the group’s role with an unprecedented movement of the Cold War period, which combined developing countries, which refused to align with both sides in a divided global order.
Lola told the leaders, “The BRICS is the heir to the non -affiliated movement.” Under the attack, with multilateral, our sovereignty is once again in check. “
The BRICS countries now represent 40 % of the world’s population and its economic production, while Lola, giving remarks to business leaders on Saturday, said business leaders have been warned about growing protection.
The original BRICS Group gathered leaders from Brazil, Russia, India and China at its first summit in 2009. The block later added South Africa and was included in Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates last year. This is the first summit of the leaders to include Indonesia.
“The gap that is left by others is almost immediately filled by Berks,” said a Brazilian diplomat. Although the G7 still focuses on vast power, the diplomat added, “It doesn’t matter once.”
However, there are questions about the combined goals of the rapidly contradictory BRICS group, which extends to include big emerging economies as well as regional rivals.
While stealing some thunderstorms from this year’s summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping chose to send his prime minister to his place. Russian President Vladimir Putin is participating online for arrest warrants from the International Criminal Court.
However, on Sunday and Monday, several heads of states were gathered at the Rio Museum of Modern Art, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Serial Ramfosa.
More than 30 countries have expressed interest in participating in the BRICS, either as a full member or partner.
Increasing riot, complication
The expansion of BRICS has increased diplomatic weight in the gathering, which wants to talk for global developing countries, which requires reforms to global institutions like the UN Security Council and the International Monetary Fund.
“If the international governance does not reflect the new multi -faceted reality of the 21st century, it depends on the BRICS,” Lola said in her remarks.
In a joint statement issued on Sunday afternoon, leaders condemned military attacks against Iran’s “civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities” under the full protection of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The group expressed “serious concern” to the Palestinian people over Israeli attacks on Gaza, and condemned that the joint statement was called a “terrorist attack” in Indian -administered Kashmir.
On trade, a joint statement warns that the “indiscriminate increase in taxes” poses a threat to global trade, continuing the group’s veil criticism over Trump’s US tariff policies.
The group expressed its support for Ethiopia and Iran to join the World Trade Organization, demanding immediate restoration of its ability to resolve trade disputes.
The joint statement of the leaders supported the group’s new development bank plans to pilot the BRICS multi -bureaucrats to reduce financial support costs and increase investment in member states, as was reported last week.
Brazil, which also hosts the UN climate summit in November, has occupied both gatherings to highlight how developing countries are dealing with climate change, while Trump has criticized US climate measures.
China and the United Arab Emirates have indicated meetings with Brazilian Finance Minister Fernando Hadid in Rio that they are intended to invest in the proposed tropical forests, according to two sources, with information about talks about talks about financing forests worldwide.
