NATO countries on Wednesday agreed to promote their defense spending to satisfy US President Donald Trump, calling it a “memorable win” for the United States – and confirmed his country’s commitment to protect his European allies.
After a two -day talks in the Hague, 32 NATO countries agreed to a 5 % GDP headline target on defense spending, Trump cut a happy personality.
Taking the “terrific” consequences that “no one really thought”, Trump described the increase in costs as “a memorable win for the United States”.
He told a news conference, “He said you did it.” “Well I don’t know I did this – but I think I did.”
In a satisfactory move for European allies, Trump signed the final leaders’ declaration, which confirmed the “Our Ironcilled commitment” with the NATO’s collective defense commitment that an attack on someone was an attack on everyone.
NATO allies supported the increase in costs to help counter the growing threat from Russia, but also to keep Trump engaging, US leaders repeatedly suggest that Washington could prevent protection of low -paying allies in Europe.
The contract appeared – at least – keep these grips to relax.
The NATO agreement has promised to dedicate 3.5 percent of GDP to basic military spending by 2035, and more security -related areas such as infrastructure, more 1.5 and more 1.5.
Signing the target on the paper, Spain has said he thinks he can meet NATO’s demands while spending less – Trump made a new criticism on Wednesday, which threatened to target his commercial interests.
But the Hague confirms the pledge that allows Trump to claim victory, while practically provides some wellers for cash -stricken governments in Europe.
The diplomats said that behind the closed doors, Trump has strongly assured of his commitment to Washington as an ally and urged others to spend some new money on US weapons.
‘Couldn’t have been good’
Everything was done at the gathering in the Hague to keep an unstable US president on the board: from cutting the official part of the meeting to putting it in the royal palace overnight.
Identifying leaders’ debates about defense was Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, and in another SOP for the demands of the allies, the United States allowed NATO to refer to the “long -term threat to Euro Atlantic Security by Russia” by Russia.
Although his tongue has been watering over the years, the statement also stated that the allies would continue to support Ukraine, whose security is supportive for us, and can use money from new expenses for financing military assistance for Kiev.
Ukraine’s Wolodmeer Zelannsky played a lesser role than the previous summit here-with cautious leaders of any kind of humor after chanting slogans of his notorious Oval Office with Trump.
But the US president met the leader of the war -affected country on the eve of the summit, and then the announcement “could not be good” and Zillski praised an “important” meeting.
Trump also said he was talking to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the war, he said: “I think progress is taking place.”
He said, despite NATO chief Mark Rod’s insistence that Ukraine’s bid for membership is “non -refundable”, the summit’s statement avoided any mention of Kiev’s pressure to join QK after Trump’s refusal.
‘Not a chair’
Trump expressed some doubts about the authenticity of NATO’s mutual defense clause, and was shaken by the allies at the summit – known as Article Five of the Alliance Agreement.
But in the last statement of the summit, the era was unclear – and Trump delivered the point at his closing press conference.
“I came here because it was the work I should have done,” Trump said, closing the remarks to the press, when the mutual defensive clause known as Article Five was pressured.
“But I left here a little differently,” said the American leader – who was apparently happy with the Red Carpet reception and was praised by NATO bread among others.
“Without the United States, they couldn’t really have NATO, they would not work,” Trump said. “This will happen in the future, because now they are paying a lot of money.”
