New York City Democrats selected 33 -year -old Muslim socialist Zahran Mamadani as its mayor candidate in Tuesday’s election, which surprised his opponent, former New York Governor Andrew Koomo.
“It was not our night tonight,” a political veteran, who was trying to return from sexual harassment scandal, told Koomo at the election night party.
“I called him, I congratulated him … he won.”
According to city officials, the Democratic Party’s experienced moderate moderate to the left side of the city is concerned.
About a dozen candidates were exhibited in the party’s primary competition seeking to become the mayor of the city’s largest city, where registered Democrats are far more than three to multiple Republicans.
At 9 am (0100 GMT Wednesday) before the pool was closed, voters put the belt during the smoking heatwave, but it may take time to finalize the results.
The contest has been selected, voters asked to select five candidates in terms of priority, nor did Koomo nor Mamadani claimed the required majority on Tuesday.
If a candidate does not win 50 % of the vote, the election officials will eliminate the lowest ranking candidates and start counting again, a process that can take days.
With the Democrats releasing the national level from Trump’s presidential election last year, the high city city race has done little to calm the party’s nerves.
But the memory encouragement campaign, which was built with a youthful social media boyfriend and campaign, and with promises to improve the city’s cheapness, seems to have resonated with voters.
Many women accused him of sexual harassment four years ago as a New York governor four years ago. He was also alleged to have mismanaged the state’s covied pandemic diseases.
“My friends, this is done. And you are the one who did it. I have the honor that you are your Democratic nominee for the mayor of New York City,” a cheerful Mamadani wrote on his X account.
Israeli supporters Coomo mostly participated in the race for the race, including a widespread name as the son of another New York governor’s son, as well as supporting powerful centerist figures, including former President Bill Clinton.
Meanwhile, Mamadani has the support of US Democratic Socialists.
The fact is that Mamadani talks for Palestinians and has accused Israel of “genocide”, he also makes them an important target for Trump.
His supporters include Trump’s two favorite foil.
“Billionaires and lobbyists put millions of people against you and our public finance system,” Okasio Cortez wrote on the X. And you won. “
Sanders posted on X, saying: “You fought political, economic and media establishment – and you defeated them.”
Voters told AFP that they saw the belt as an opportunity to guide party politics.
“I see it as a Democratic Party referendum, even if we are more inclined towards the Central Candidate, which is probably from a different generation of politicians and people in society, or a small, left side, more expensive, ideal party.”
Big ideas, less experience
Currently, an assembly from a New York state that represents the Borrow of Queens, Mamadani stands for his enthusiastic election campaign style and spectacular policy proposals that include rent for many New Yorkrs, providing free bus service, and Universal Children’s Care.
And in a very expensive city, where a three -bed apartment can easily cost 000 6,000, it has increased from behind.
“Yesterday is ours if we want it,” Mamadani, who was born in Uganda and is of the Indian race, said in a social media post late Monday. “We are in relation to the demolition of a political family, and the supply of New York that everyone can afford.”
48 -year -old voter Emun Harkin said prices are “the first issue.”
“What is at stake is basically New York,” he said.
But Sheryl Stein, who works in tourism marketing, was skeptical.
“I like youth,” he said. But Mamadani has “no experience to run the country’s largest city and the world’s largest city, nor is there any proven track record, it is very scary.”
The Democratic Party’s nominee will face a number of contenders in November-the current, the scandal-affected mayor, Eric Adams, who is the Democrat, but has vowed to run independently.
