Australian all -rounder Glenn Maxwell announced an immediate retirement from One Day International on Monday, ending his 50 overs career.
The 36 -year -old youth will be available for T20 International and is expected to move forward in the Australian team for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
The decision is after leaving the Australian semi -finals from the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, and Steven Smith, the winner of the ODI World Cup, has also come shortly after retiring from the format.
Although Maxwell has not been officially retired from Test cricket, the return to the Red Ball game is considered impossible.
The announcement was made during a long form interview on the final word podcast, where Maxwell cited the physical damage of ODI cricket, especially after a serious leg injury to his legs in 2022, as an important factor in his decision.
“I felt as if I was letting the team down a bit about how the body was reacting to the situation,” said Maxwell. “I had a good conversation [Australia chair of selectors] George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward.
“We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I told them ‘I don’t think I’m going to make it, it is time to start planning for the people in my position to crack on it and make the position their own’.
“I always said that I would not hand over my position if I think I am still good enough to play. I just didn’t want to keep in a series and almost played for self -reasons.
“They are moving in such a clear direction, so take a look at them for what the lineup is in this next World Cup. I know how important the plan is.”
Maxwell insisted that he does not want to keep himself in for his own reasons and is sure to step aside makes Australia clear in the future planning.
Despite the slightest raw data – 33.81 and 77 wickets for 47.32 were 47.32 for 33,990 runs – Maxwell’s impact on the game was very high. His 126.70 strike rate is second after Andre Russell in the history of ODIs and is unprecedented among the players with more than 2,000 runs.
His ODI career consisted of four monuments, which was not more famous than his unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan during the 2023 World Cup in Mumbai.
The knock, which chased 292 after ending 7 runs for 7 wickets in Australia, chased 292, Australia’s first double century, first in Chase, and the first by non -opener.
“I’m so fortunate that I can spend my moment,” Maxwell said about his biggest innings. “Everything for which you have worked hard, the peak of your options, can put it in front of the world to see it, and it’s almost almost like this, it is the best of me, you can take it or leave it, but it has found all this.”
Maxwell set the fastest century record in the history of the One-Day World Cup-which is only 40 balls against the Netherlands in Delhi-as well as the fourth fastest ton, which he scored in 51 balls against Sri Lanka during the 2015 tournament in Sydney.
Another standout performance came in 2020 when he and Alex Kerry chased 303 against England at Old Trafford when Australia scored 73 for 5. Maxwell’s 108 off 90 balls played a vital role in winning the series.
“I think this was probably one of my favorite memories,” said Maxwell. “Being out with Alex Kerry, he started his innings a little, but once he started getting the ball in the middle a few times, he enjoyed it there.”
“And to be part of its first one -day hundred, and to play a great role in winning the series that is running on everything [previous] He added that in a few months, not playing cricket for a long time, and keeping everyone in a biotech bubble and stopting the Singh Non Stop, it made it worth it.
Maxwell’s bowling, which is often a shade of his batting, is also important in major tournaments. He played a key role in the 2015 World Cup as the Australian Front Line Spinner, and during the 2023 edition in India, once again as the second spinner, maintaining an impressive economy rate of 4.81.
He also presented one of the most memorable final overs in the history of the one -day history.
Known for his electric fielding, Maxwell permanently contributed to key positions both inside and deep, which gained fame as one of Australia’s best all -round fielders.
The chairman of Australian selectors George Bailey praised Maxwell’s overall contribution in the game.
Greenberg said, “Congratulations to Glenn about what has been one of the most interesting and influential international careers of a day in the format history.” “Glenn’s ballistic batting has illuminated the world of cricket and has been the basis for Australian success in the 50 overs, which includes his brave role in the 2023 World Cup victory.
“Like other great works of the game, the crowd has only come to the field to see Glenn bat and children are encouraged to see that they are seeing opposition attacks on the sword with one of the shots.
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg also paid tribute to Maxwell’s career.
“Australian cricket is delayed by Glenn to exploit its ODIs and is excited that he will now focus on our struggle to win the ICT20 World Cup next year.”
Maxwell is currently recovering from a fracture that remains during the IPL, but it is expected that Major League cricket will be returning to the United States in less than two weeks.
He is likely to be named in the Australian team for the five -match T20 series in the Caribbean, which begins July 20.
