Anari Village is in the center of the Tharparkar desert region. It is a group of 240 households and has a population of close to 3500. The pursuit of education is a daily struggle for its residents. After years of ignoring the government, villagers have taken public education to ensure their children’s better future.
Government Boys Elementary School, Canary, also lacks a suitable building. Students from Class 1 to 5 study in three sticks. Middle school students attend classes in two unused dispensary rooms. The government teaching staff is comprised of two primary school teachers and a junior school teacher. They all currently teach middle school classes. To eliminate this gap, the community hired three additional teachers to teach primary grade.
Enrollment figures speak volumes:
Basic level: 200 students (including 70 girls)
Middle -level: 100 students (including 25 girls)
Infrastructure is extremely inadequate. There are only 10 desk. In 2024, a donor donated 50 chairs. Villagers participated in money to buy 20 benchs. During the last Ramadan, some NGOs donated school bags, stationery, clothes and shoes, which provide some temporary relief to children.
To maintain community -serving teachers, the village has introduced a fee sharing model. Parents of children studying above class 4 contribute Rs 500 per month. Currently, around 60 families are participating in the move. A collective effort to run the school is very important.
Although the government management committee is currently inactive, the residents of the Canary have taken matters into their own hands by setting up a community -led SMC. It consists of 20 active members. The committee oversees school affairs, raising funds, and taking over additional responsibilities such as organizing events on Independence Day and Act. It also steps when funds are needed to take care of classrooms or to help some students.
Despite these efforts, education beyond the middle school is a dream for most of them. Only 10 % of students get higher education. The majority of boys are forced to migrate to cities for work. Girls often get married soon due to lack of close educational institutions.
2025 has been a historic year. For the first time since 1947, five Canary girls have completed the matriculation. He studied at a private high school in Keith Verry, about five kilometers away, and took advantage of the free domestic tuition given by Alexander Ali, a devout teacher, which has been the light of hope for the village.
The nearest government college is about 50 km away, in the cross. It makes higher education inaccessible, especially for girls.
Canary people are not asking for charity. They are just demanding their basic right to education. Their quick appeals include:
Construction of a proper school building with classrooms, toilets and boundary walls
Establishment of Science and Computer Labs, recognizing digital literacy in IT’s important role and modern education
Establishing a library to promote reading and learning culture
Appointment of enough teaching staff
Free textbooks, stationery and scholarships for deserving students
To upgrade the school to a high school level to reduce the dropout rates
The opening of a college nearby so that young, especially girls, can access higher education without leaving the village.
