All this has not been achieved suddenly, remembering the history of Pakistan’s baseball, but it is after the difficult world and dedicated efforts of the sportsmen in the country.
The journey of Pakistan in baseball has been a strong development, which has a history of perseverance and passion. Although the baseball was relatively unknown in the country at the time of its creation in 1947, which was shaded by popular sports like cricket, hockey and football, its presence gradually increased, which established itself as a niche game with a loyal following.
Over time, with the dedication of individuals and organizations, the baseball in Pakistan has emerged from unclear and has become a recognized game nationally and internationally.
In the late 1980s, the Federation (PBF) marked a turning point. Quetta -based cricket administrator Ijaz Yosuf (later Justice Ijaz Yusuf) and his brother Javed Yusuf played an important role in the establishment of the Federation. At the same time, in 1990, FATA Federal Minister Faridullah Malik formed a separate group of the Federation, supported by US diplomatic aid in the form of baseball gear and equipment.
However, the existence of several baseball federations created confusion, in which three rival organizations emerged. During this time, a passionate sportsman and divisional sports officer in Gujranwala took decisive steps to unite the federations. With the cricketing stars Humayun and Imran Farhat’s father Farhat Hussain Siddiqui, Shah successfully persuaded Malik Faridullah’s faction to integrate with the federation, which he had formed under Deputy Commissioner Gujranwala.
Until 1992, his headquarters in Gujranwala led by Khur Shah, a single Unified Pakistan Baseball Federation, emerged. It laid the foundation for a more organized and compatible baseball structure in the country.
The first national baseball championship was organized by the nine united federation in 1992. Teams from across the country, including Islamabad Baseball Association, participated in the tournament. In particular, the Islamabad team included prominent national cricketers such as Shoaib Akhtar, Azhar Mahmood, and Irfan Bhatti. The inaugural incident identified the beginning of a new era for Pakistan baseball.
Khwaja Shah’s dedication and numerous efforts helped to increase the game. He played a vital role in gaining affiliation with the Pakistan Baseball Federation with the Pakistan Sports Board, the Pakistan Olympic Association, and international baseball bodies.
This allowed Pakistani players to participate in regional, international and global baseball events, which put the country on a global baseball map.
Shah’s tireless work ensured that Pakistan should achieve baseball development despite limited resources. His dream was that Pakistan’s flag was to be seen high in the international baseball field, and he worked diligently to achieve that goal.
Under the leadership of Khawar Shah and later under his son, Fakir Shah, Pakistan’s baseball team started participating in major international events. Since 2003, the national team has been regularly involved in the Asian Baseball Championship, which has fought against top teams like Japan, Chinese Taipei and South Korea. Although Pakistan faced challenges in these tournaments, they defeated Indonesia in the 2015 Asian Baseball Championship and secured a respected fifth position.
Pakistan also has a record of Asian Baseball Cup titles.
In 2015, Pakistan’s national team participated in the Asian Baseball Championship in Taiwan as the Western Asian champion. Next year, the team started its World Baseball Classic Absolute in New York.
With a strong foundation and the future of baseball in Pakistan, the leadership of personalities like Syed Fakhr Shah seems promising. The game has come a long way from its humble start, and as the federation is increasing its efforts, the dream of seeing Pakistan as a dominant force in international baseball can soon become a reality.
