WASHINGTON/LONDON/PARIS: US President Donald Trump has confronted Ukrainian leader Wolodmeer Zelinsky on a refusal to accept Russia’s claims regarding Russia’s Crimea, warning that the United States could go away from the ongoing peace talks.
Trump’s Vice President JD Venus said it was time for Russia and Ukraine to either agree with the US peace proposal, “or to go away from the process for the United States,” Trump said last week echoing a warning.
Talking to reporters in India, Venus said the proposal calls for the freezing of regional lines “to some extent today” and “a long -term diplomatic settlement that is expected to lead to long -term peace.” “
“The only way to stop the killing is to keep both of their weapons down for the forces, to freeze this,” he said.
A former Western official, who was aware of the US proposal, said it also called for acknowledging Russia’s commitment to Crimea.
Zlinski’s Chief of Staff, André Yarmak, said in a post on X on Wednesday that he called on the United States in London that Ukraine would “stick to its basic principles during the talks”, which relates to sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Zelinski reiterated on Tuesday that Ukraine would not recognize Russia’s commitment to Crimea, and said: “There is nothing to talk about here. It is against our constitution.”
Trump, who discussed Zilnski at a television Oval Office meeting in March, called it an inflammatory statement that made it difficult to achieve a peace deal.
The US president said that Crimea was lost years ago “and that is not.”
“No one is asking Zilinski to recognize Crimea as a Russian territory, but, if he wants Crimea, why didn’t he fight for him eleven years ago when he was handed over to Russia without any shot dismissed?” Trump wrote the truth on social.
Russian fighters took control of the peninsula in 2014, which was internationally condemned. Very few countries acknowledge Russia’s Crimea claims.
Trump told the Ukrainian leader Damat Degate and said the United States was trying to stop the killings in his country and that he was “very close to a deal” for peace.
Since taking office in January, Trump has changed the US view rapidly, and pressed Ukraine to agree to ceasefire, while the Biden administration reduced many steps taken to punish Russia due to a full 2022 attack on its neighbor.
Nevertheless, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andri Sabah said after Wednesday that Kiev was obliged to work with the United States to achieve peace.
Robio Cancels London Trip
Earlier, the United States, Ukrainian and European officials met for peace talks in London, which aimed to end the three -year war. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio canceled his journey there, and raised questions about how much progress was being made.
Rubio’s nine show indicated the cancellation of a broader meeting with the Foreign Ministers from Ukraine, Britain, France and Germany, which emphasized the difference between Washington, Kiev and its European allies on how to end the war.
Trump has warned that Washington may go to Washington if there is no progress on an agreement soon. He increased pressure on Sunday when he said he hoped that Moscow and Kiev would make an agreement to end the conflict this week.
At the center of Wednesday, it was an attempt to set up that Trump’s special envoy Steve Watkov could potentially be accepted after making suggestions at a similar meeting in Paris last week. Three diplomats said the proposals appear to be demanding more concessions than Ukraine than Russia.
A spokesman for the British Prime Minister’s Kerry Starger expressed any disappointment over Rubio’s sudden cancellation, saying that the talks included “important technical meetings on ways to stop the fight with European, US and Ukrainian officials.”
The spokesman said, “We are determined to achieve a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine, and today these things are an important part of it.”
Near the talks, an official said progress was taking place.
Since Trump expressed his desire for peace in Ukraine and made a surprising call to Russian President Vladimir Putin in February, European countries have entered into ways to support Kiev against Moscow by continuing the United States.
But Vaticov’s suggestions, which several sources have said, recognizing Russia’s commitment to Crimea, Washington began to lose sanctions on Russia and began to deny NATO’s Ukrainian membership, which is unacceptable to both Kiev and other European countries.
Sources said the US proposals include Ukraine and European residents, which are controlling 20 % of Russia’s Ukraine territory, which it has achieved in the war. The diplomats said Russia was pushing for EU sanctions against it before the talks ended, which has been strongly opposed to Europe.
Sources close to the debate said that after the collapse of the parley, Ukraine had prepared a dissertation for the Europeans on Tuesday, saying that there would be no talks on regional issues until “a complete and unconditional ceasefire”.
