ISLAMABAD: Senator Sherry Rehman, the Senate Standing Committee for Climate Change, celebrated Earth’s 55th anniversary with a strong call for bold bold action on renewable energy and environmental protection.
Celebrating his 55th anniversary of Earth Day, this year’s Earth Day Theme, ‘Our Power, Our Planet’ in a statement on Monday demanded that people around the world unite behind renewable energy and promote clean electricity by 2030.
He emphasized that this global call is particularly relevant to the countries on the frontier of the climate, which emphasizes collective action to accelerate the transfer of clean energy. Sherry Rehman said, “Earth Day is more than a moment’s reflection.
“The climate crisis is intensifying, but our resolve is like that. As soon as the world is facing the climate shock, Pakistan is moving forward with real solutions. Our renewable energy is not just a need – this is a model for the global South.”
It pointed to Pakistan’s rapid progress in solar energy as a light of hope. According to a recent World Economic Forum (WEF) report, Pakistan has become the sixth largest market in the solar energy market globally, offering a powerful blueprint for other developing countries seeking sustainable energy alternatives.
“In the last financial year alone, Pakistan imported 15 GW solar panels worth $ 2.1 billion from China,” he said, citing the results of a new research, a great solar rush in Pakistan. “This extraordinary change has been widely driven by a 155 % increase in electricity prices over the last three years.
He said that Pakistan’s clean energy affiliation has been firmly embedded in its international climate promises. “According to its national level contribution (NDC), the country aims to get 60 % of the power output from renewable sources by 2030. Net zero emissions by 2050 are 30 % transfer to electric vehicles by 2030 and a complete ban on imported coal.”
Already, he said that the Ministry of Power says that more than 55 % of our electricity is being manufactured through clean sources like hydropower and nuclear energy.
Senator Rehman noted that these figures will only increase when we are increasing investment in renewable sources. This is a suitable moment for the federal government to assess its planned changes in solar energy, which needs to be made in accordance with the country’s needs for cheap cleaning. From any policy that reduces the concessions for clean energy to balance the burden management, it should consider re -invest in old technologies and modernize the distributed energy system rather than an aging, ineffective central grid.
He said that there are examples of renewable energy measures that aims to eliminate the energy gap for the weak communities, and indicate the importance of scaling such efforts to ensure comprehensive access to clean energy. “Sindh Solar Energy Project (SSEP), headed by PPP Chairman Bilal Bhutto Zardari, is delivering the cheap solar system to 500,000 less consumption households. Through the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), the need for more people is needed.”
In the city of urban transport, he praised the Sindh’s trail billing role in decoration. He said, “In 2023, the Sindh government launched Pakistan’s first electric bus service in Karachi. Today, with the approval of 500 completely electric buses for Karachi, public transport has made a significant jump in modernization and air quality improvement.”
Sherry Rehman, with a strong message of climate solidarity, concluded: “We do not have the luxury of delay. The planet is telling us that it is time to go to the extracting, pollution system to a sustainable, fair, and a comprehensive future.
