Rawalpindi: Police briefly detained Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leaders and former Premier Imran Khan’s sisters from a check post near Adiala Jail and later released them in the Chakri Interchange.
The arrests were made after the leaders were busy verbalizing with the police as they were not allowed to meet the PTI founder, who is imprisoned in Adiala jail.
National Assembly Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan, Sunni Attaad Council (SIC) chief and PTI Eli Sahib Zada Hameed Raza and Punjab opposition leader Ahmed Khan Bhach were detained by police.
PTI founders Sisters Elima Khan, Noreen Khanum and Ozma Khanam were also taken into custody.
Overall, seven PTI leaders, including former Premier’s sisters and his cousin Qasim Khan, have been taken by police officers in a prison van.
Police officials told the leaders, “We will arrest you all.”
“Look, they are arresting the opposition leader,” Ayub told reporters before going to the jail van, adding: “[…] Opposition leaders, Hameed Raza, and other leaders are also present in the Punjab Assembly. “
He added that he did not allow Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi to sit in the Lower House. “What kind of law is this? There is always a rule of law in severe condition. Our ancestors have sacrificed for this nation.”
Talking to Geo News, PTI spokesman Sheikh Waqas Akram strongly condemned the arrest of party leaders, calling it “extremely disappointing”.
He called on the government to immediately release the PTI leaders and Khan’s sisters immediately, and if the authorities did not stop using such plans, warned “strong public reaction”.
The arrests took place a week later when PTI workers clashed with law enforcement near Rawalpindi Adiala Jail, police arrested several workers and leaders.
The clash took place at the Gorakhpur post, where PTI workers raised slogans and shouted slogans after refusing to allow party leaders to meet the founder of the party in jail.
In response, police resorted to the protesters to charge the sticks, while PTI supporters threw stones at law enforcement personnel. During the repetition, several PTI leaders and workers were taken into custody.
The opposition leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub dismissed the situation after assuring the police of cooperation after intervention.
Police also detained Imran’s sisters – Emma Khan and Azma Khan – and PTI leader Aaliyah Hamza. The PTI ally and SIC chief Sahibzada were also among the detainees.
However, he was released after hours and left for his cousin Qasim as well as his residence.
On the other hand, the federal government refused any role in banning Khan’s party leaders and members of the family.
A day ago, Information Minister Ataullah Tarar had clearly rejected the claim of unfair treatment with the founder of the PTI jail party, saying that the former Premier did not deprive any of any jail facilities.
Addressing the Geo News Program “Today Shahbaz Khanzada’s Seth”, he said that Khan is allowed to meet people several times a week, and he is the only political leader who has enjoyed such gentleness.
He maintained that the PTI was fighting between its leaders and was divided into two factions. “I don’t really know which PTI faction is preventing another from meeting [Imran Khan]”He added.
His statements came when several PTI leaders were blamed for each other for trying to meet Khan in Adiala Jail in Rahulpindi.
