Panama City: Panama has signed a small security agreement with the United States that allows US troops to use local military facilities, but rejects permanent US bases, after national sovereignty and public reaction concerns.
This development is being seen as a major concession to President Donald Trump as he tries to re -establish influence on the main waterway.
The agreement, signed by top security officials from both countries, allows US military personnel to be deployed to Panama -controlled facilities for training, exercises and “other activities”.
The agreement has no shortage of allowing the United States to build its permanent bases on the United States, a move that is filled with Panamans and legally.
However, it gives the United States a wide range of authority to deploy unprovoked numbers to the bases – some of which Washington built several decades ago to occupy the canal zone.
Since returning to power in January, Trump has repeatedly claimed that China has a great influence on the canal, which accounts for 40 % of US container traffic and five percent of global trade.
His administration has promised to “withdraw” the strategic waterway, which the United States funded, constructed and controlled by 1999.
The United States has long participated in military exercises in Panama.
However, a long-term rotating force, like the United States of the United States, is sustained in Australia-Panama’s right leader, Jose Raul Milno, can be politically poisonous.
‘Fire on the country’
Millno was in Peru on Thursday, where he revealed that the United States had asked to keep its bases.
Milano said he saw the Pentagon chief Pet Hegsit that US bases, which are permitted under the draft, would be “unacceptable”.
He warned Hegsit: “Do you want to create a mess? What we have kept here will set the country on fire.”
On Wednesday, Hagsith and Panama’s security chief Frank Irigo was watered in the “Memorandum of Understanding”, Panama received its privileges.
The United States recognizes Panama’s sovereignty – not given after refusing to reject Trump’s attack – and Panama will control any installations.
Panama will also need to approve any deployment.
But in view of Trump’s willingness to tear down or rewrite trade deals, contracts and contracts, which can provide a little comfort to the Panama.
This country has a long and complex relationship with the United States.
He shares close cultural and economic relations, despite decades -long US occupation to eliminate the dictator Manuel Norega 35 years before the canal zone and US invasion.
The attack killed more than 500 Panama and destroyed parts of the capital.
Trump’s promise to re -claim the canal, and his Chinese influence claims have sparked widespread demonstrations.
According to the law, Panama runs the canal with open access to all countries.
However, the US president has eliminated the role of a Hong Kong company that has worked on ports at both ends of the canal – by connecting the Atlantic and the Pacific – for decades.
Under the White House pressure, Panama has accused the Panama Ports Company of failing to fulfill its contract responsibilities and pushing the firm to withdraw from the country.
The main port company, CK Hutchinson, announced the offload of 43 ports in 23 countries last month – including two of its two on the Panama Canal – US Asset Manager Blackrock -led Consortium in cash worth $ 19 billion.
Subsequently, Beijing has announced a dissatisfaction review of the deal.
