ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has summoned experienced politician and prominent Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Farhatullah Babar as part of an investigation launched by a citizen’s complaint.
The FIA issued a formal notice to Babar on March 28, in which he was directed to join the investigation. According to the notice, the PPP’s experienced leader has been accused of tax evasion and corruption.
In his written response to the FIA, Babar, who is a widely respected figure in Pakistani politics, has demanded access to the complete record of the complaint, including specific allegations against him.
Sources close to Babar revealed that in his talks with the agency, he pointed out that the preliminary notice lacked critical details, such as a clear list of allegations or auxiliary evidence.
Nevertheless, in a cooperation show, Babar appeared before the FIA as directed. During the session, they were allegedly asked to submit a detailed record of their tax, income and assets.
Babar, who is also a prominent human rights activist, also emphasized his right to review all the basic documents presented in the assets and the complaint. Note his long absence from the public office, he also asked the FIA to clarify the specific government position he was accused of misusing.
Expressing concerns over the inquiry behavior, Babar said dealing with the matter raises serious questions about its fair and justified. It has formally requested the FIA to leave it which he considers as baseless.
This development attracted significant attention from political circles, media and rights organizations.
Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has strongly criticized the FIA’s inquiry against PPP Human Rights Cell President Farhatullah Babar, and has encouraged the allegations against them baseless and politically.
PFUJ President Afzal Butt and Secretary General Irshad Ansari condemned the investigation as a clear act of threatening against Babar, a steadfast lawyer for human rights, the freedom of the press, and a independent expression. The union has raised serious concerns over the complaint’s justification and the FIA’s decision to forward the case.
“The union views it as a direct attack on Babar’s lawyer and as a potential threat to freedom of expression in the country.”
The union is suspected of targeting the electoral, which clearly presented Babar’s high -level advocacy and rights issues.
Demanding the immediate termination of the investigation, PFUJ warned against harassment of journalists and workers. “We stand firmly with Farhatullah Babar and confirm our commitment to defend human rights and free speech in Pakistan,” the statement added.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) also strongly condemns the FIA inquiry against human rights protector Farhatullah Babar.
“Based on a private citizen’s complaint, he raises serious doubts about his justification at the time of this investigation, because Babar – who has been a motivator behind Pakistan’s most progressive legislation and also works in the HRCP’s Governing Council,” is another example of state policies and institutions. This is another example. This is another example. Said
The HRCP said that this is also a dangerous ideology, especially when the person involved in the question played a significant role in the causes of democratic and human rights of Pakistan.
The statement states, “HRCP expresses solidarity with Babar and demands that the inquiry be withdrawn and Babar should be issued a public apology through the state.”
