Geneva: Two months after President Donald Trump announces to stop US engagement with the UN Human Rights Council, Washington is affecting its work by applying pressure behind the scenes.
Sources told Reuters that the United Nations left its seat vacant during a six -week meeting of the 47 -member council ending Friday, but its lobbying and pressure had some success.
He said that the United States, which has accused the Council of anti -Israeli prejudice, on the formation of an international, neutral and independent mechanism (IIIM) by Pakistan, which focuses on Israeli -occupied Israeli territories on a stern investigation into a UN investigation into Israeli territories.
The version of Pakistan’s proposal, which was approved by the Council on Wednesday, whose mission is to promote and protect human rights worldwide, was not included in the formation of IIIM.
The council already has a commission to inquire about the Palestinian territories, but Pakistan’s proposal has created an additional investigation with additional powers to collect proof of possible use in international courts.
A letter sent by the US House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Brian Mast and Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman James R Resich on March 31 warned against the proposal.
The letter states, “Any HRC member state or the UN agency that supports specific IIM related to Israel … will face similar results as the ICC faced.” It seems that the Prime Minister of Israel and the Israeli Prime Minister in Gaza, citing sanctions approved by the House of Representatives in the International Criminal Court, on charges of a warrant for Israel’s Israeli campaign.
In the last version of Pakistan’s proposal, the UN General Assembly has only cited the invitation to consider IIIM in the future.
Two Geneva -based diplomats said they had received messages from US diplomats before changing the words, calling for them to oppose a new investigation. “They were saying: ‘Leave this problem behind’,” one spoke on condition of anonymity.
Reuters could not establish whether the review was a direct result of US measures.
A spokesman for the State Department said that it was complying with Trump’s signed executive order on February 4, which is withdrawing from the Council and will not participate in it, adding: “As a policy issue, we do not comment on private diplomatic talks.”
Pakistan’s diplomatic mission in Geneva did not respond to a request to comment. “It seems that the United States is trying to get it in both ways,” said Lucy McCarnan, the UN deputy director at the Geneva Office of the Human Rights Watch.
The United States and Israel are not members of the Council, but as all the UN member states have an informal observer status and a meeting of the Council meeting in the Chamber. International human rights organizations are now at a turning point, said Phil Lynch, a NGO, Director of International Human Rights Services.
“We are potentially fighting the future, which features lawlessness and raw power,” he said. The United States was once the largest donor in the UN rights system, but Trump has said that the United Nations is “not being run well” and the aid deductions by his administration forced the scaleback.
The United States and Israel have also opposed the mandate of an independent council experts during the meeting. The Israeli ambassador said March 24 that Franciska Albanian, a critic of Israeli actions in Gaza, violated the UN Code of Conduct through “clear anti -ideological behavior and dialogue”, a diplomatic note said.
The US State Department spokesman said that Albania was “disqualified for their role”. “The correspondence is under consideration,” said Council spokesman Pascal Sim.
