Pakistan Tehreek Justice (PTI) has announced that it will not attend today’s camera meeting of the parliamentary committee on national security unless its leaders are allowed to meet Imran Khan, the founder of the party before the important meeting.
The decision was made during a meeting of the PTI’s political committee last night, in which a statement was issued demanding that its representatives be allowed to consult Imran Khan before participating in a high level of conversation.
This development came after a multi-faceted opposition coalition, led by Mahmud Khan Achakzai, the Tahrik-E-Tahfoz-AI-I-Pakistan (TTAP) announced that it would not attend the meeting.
Later, Akhtar Mengal, chief of the Balochistan National Party Mengal (BNPM), also decided to stay away from the meeting. Another opposition leader, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, chairman of the Majlis-e-Wahdat-Muslim (MWM), also announced that the opposition parties would not attend the national security meeting.
PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Ikram confirmed that the PTI committee had deliberately held an emergency meeting on the matter. He said, “Our participation in the meeting depends on allowing our founder, Imran Khan. Without his guidance, we cannot move forward.
Sources within the party revealed that several members of the PTI’s Care Committee have raised objections to the preliminary decision to submit a name for the meeting without proper consultation. He especially criticized the decision, saying that Chief Whip Aamir Dougar should have already discussed the matter with both political and basic committees.
Earlier, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Federal Minister Tariq Fazil Chaudhry had contacted the former ruling party, and requested the names of the meeting. In response, the party presented a list of 14 representatives, including Barrister Gohar Khan, Asad Qaiser, Zartaj Gul, Aamir Dogar, Ali Muhammad Khan, Barrister Ali Zafar, and Sahibzada Hameed Raza.
On Monday, Aamir Dogar met the NA Speaker and insisted that the three -member parliamentary delegation be allowed to meet Imran Khan to get his instructions before the National Security Summit.
Dogar claimed that the speakers and other ministers had assured them that they would make the meeting easier, but no progress has been made so far.
In the camera session
The rare meeting of the parliament is scheduled to be held at 11am on Tuesday, in which military officials will inform the lawmakers about the current security situation in the country in the backdrop of recent deadly terrorist attacks. Rana Sanaullah, assistant to the Prime Minister’s political and public affairs, said that civilian and military leadership will deliberately know the strategy to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a “proxy” state.
Addressing the GEO News Program ‘South of Shahbaz Khanzada today’, the leader of the Muslim League’s ruling noted that the meeting will not only focus on persuading Afghanistan to maintain neutrality, but will also discuss the future process if Kabul refuses to accept Pakistan’s territory.
The camera has come up against the growing terrorist background in Pakistan, including a major terrorist attack on a passenger train in the Mashkaf area of Bolan district of Balochistan.
Dozens of militants belonging to the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) blew up the railway track and attacked the Jaffar Express on Tuesday, in which more than 440 passengers were taken – who were taken hostage.
After a complex clearance operation, security forces neutralized 33 attackers and rescued hostage passengers.
In addition to five operational casualties, more than 26 passengers were martyred by the terrorists, of which 18 were security personnel belonging to the Pakistan Army and the Frontier Corps (FC), three were officials of Pakistan Railways and other departments, and five were civilians.
Talking to the media after the end of the operation of the security forces, Director General for Inter Services Public Relations (DGISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry revealed that the terrorists were in touch with their handlers in Afghanistan.
Lieutenant General Chaudhry’s remarks reflect Islamabad’s stance that has repeatedly urged Kabul to prevent its land from being used by terrorist organizations against Pakistan.
During the Monday program, Sanaullah said the interim Afghan government provided safe havens to the terrorists, where they train, plan and attack. “These terrorists receive funds from India,” he said, expressing his commitment that their safe havens would be removed in a few weeks and months.
When asked about Afghanistan’s cooperation in the fight against terrorism, he said that the military leadership was following a multi -dimensional policy and would input from the civilian leadership to prevent Afghanistan from acting as a proxy or being a weapon in the hands of India.
However, he said that the issue would be resolved one way or another, noting that refusing to comply with Afghanistan is not equivalent to a dead end. “There are many ways in our power,” he said.
In response to a question, Sanaullah said that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir and his team, including the Director General of Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), Asim Malik and others will attend the meeting and one member of the team will shorten the lawmakers.
In addition, the Prime Minister’s Assistant noted that the military leadership will also get input from the civilian leadership during the meeting. “If anything emerges in a meeting that requires [PML-N President and three-time Prime Minister] Nawaz Sharif is fully prepared to do so, to play his role.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, both of whom share borders with neighboring Afghanistan, have faced terrorist attacks – both provinces have participated in more than 96 % of terrorist attacks and deaths in Pakistan in 2024.
