BEIJING: China and Russia stood with Iran on Friday when the United States demanded nuclear talks with Tehran, told senior Chinese and Russian diplomats that dialogue should be resumed only on the basis of “mutual respect” and all sanctions should be lifted.
In a joint statement issued after talks with Iran in Beijing, China and Russia also said that they welcomed Iran’s repeat that its nuclear program was specifically for peaceful purposes, and that Tehran’s right to peaceful use of nuclear energy should be “fully” respected.
In 2015, Iran agreed to stop its nuclear program in exchange for lifting international sanctions in the deal with the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. But in 2018, Donald Trump, a year in his first term, came out of the deal as US President.
“(China, Russia and Iran) emphasized that the relevant parties should be determined to deal with the main cause of the current situation and to abandon the risk of approval, pressure or power.”
The MA said that China, Russia and Iran also emphasized the need to lift all “illegal” sanctions.
After meeting with MA’s Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Rabkov and Iranian Foreign Minister Kazim Ghari Abadi, Tehran came a few days after ending the “orders” to start a dialogue on the nuclear program.
Last week, Trump said he had sent a letter to Iran’s top leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, proposing a nuclear dialogue, adding that “there are two ways to handle Iran: militarily, or you agree.”
Iranian President Masood Pazeshkian replied that he would not talk to the United States during “threatening”, and that Iran would not bow down to us to talk.
Six members of the United Nations Security Council – six members from the United States, France, Greece, Panama, South Korea and the United Kingdom further aggravated Iran after holding a closed door meeting this week to discuss their nuclear program. Tehran said the meeting was the “misuse” of the UN Security Council.
China also criticized the meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday that “hasty” interference by the council is not helpful in increasing confidence.
According to Iranian officials, despite Tehran’s notorious rhetoric, engage with the United States to hammer the nuclear deal can be a more practical option, with restrictions on the Iranian economy and preventing public unrest.
The nuclear program
Iran has long denied that it is working to produce nuclear weapons. But the International Atomic Energy Agency said last month that Iran is “dramatically” enriching uranium enrichment near about 90 90 % of weapons grade levels.
In February, Trump restored his “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran, which included attempts to bring oil exports to zero to prevent it from obtaining nuclear weapons.
“The Iranian nuclear program is peaceful in nature,” said Iran’s home on Friday.
“It is under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Iran is getting a lot of examination with IAEA, and our nuclear program has never been removed from extraordinary purposes.”
Ghar Babdi said that the main reason for the current situation is the return of the United States from the 2015 agreement.
China hopes that all parties will meet each other on half a way and start dialogue and talks as soon as possible, Wang told Iranian and Russian ministers separately after the tripartite meeting.
Wang said that the United States should show “sincerity” and return to talks with Iran as soon as possible.
In addition, the Iranian Foreign Ministry on Friday condemned the new US sanctions on Iranian Minister of Oil and some Hong Kong flag aircraft, which help hide Iranian oil shipment.
According to Iranian state media, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghi said new sanctions “are clear evidence of falsehood … repeated claims about their preparations for US officials talks.”
