Another patient at the Mayo Hospital suffered a suspected injection reaction, doubled the casualties.
Earlier, a woman who was treated at the facility died and 15 others suffered a negative reaction to the injection in the chest ward.
Three affected patients were put on ventilators. The hospital spokesman said it was in ventilator patients.
He said the rest of the patients are now at risk.
Hospital sources revealed that no lab had been tested before the patients were injecting.
In response to the incident, the hospital administration stopped the use of injection and constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the matter.
Prof. Dr. Israrul Haq has been issued a information for the appointment of the inquiry committee.
The committee also includes Chief Pharmacists, Deputy Nursing Officer, and AMS of the hospital. Meanwhile, the hospital administration has directed that all the remaining reserves of the injection be returned to the pharmacy immediately.
The hospital made it clear that the injection was not expired and it was provided by the Punjab government in 2024.
Taking notice of the matter, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz sought a report from the Special Health Care Secretary and offered condolences to the bereaved families.
It also ordered the best medical treatment and action of the victims against those responsible for negligence.
It may be recalled that Punjab CM Maryam recently took action against mismanagement at Mayo Hospital Lahore.
According to a report published in The News, Health Minister of Health Khwaja Salman Rafiq said that despite the fact that the facility has a lot of reserves of syringes, Bernal and other disposables, medicines are being sought from outside the hospital.
In addition, the pathology lab had all kinds of test facilities, but was asked to test outside the patients.
Mayo Hospital’s own budget was Rs 1.5 billion. Special health care and medical education department bought additional medicines of Rs 220 million from Mayo Hospital’s top -up stock. The Department of Health once again paid Rs 340 million to Mayo Hospital for the purchase of Madison on Saturday.
The hospital had Rs 1.5 lakh in UHI and Rs 190 million in the PLA account, yet medicines were not purchased. Professor Ahsan Noman, Chief Executive Officer of Mayo Hospital and Medical Superintendent Prof. Faisal Masood were removed from his positions due to his disqualification.
The minister said, “One percent negligence in the treatment of patients in any government hospital will not be tolerated.”
Punjab Health Minister Salman Rafiq spoke to Geo News and attributed it to human error. He explained that the injection was in the form of powder, and an error was made while preparing the solution.
According to Rafiq, the affected patients received the third dose, while the first two doses did not react negatively.
The minister revealed that 6,000 injections were provided at the hospital and they were arranged in various departments. However, the negative reaction was only reported in the chest ward.
Rafiq said the powder report would be available till evening, while the next day a report on the solution would be issued.
He further revealed that the same injection was divided into various hospitals in Lahore as well as Narowal.
The minister emphasized that nurses are trained to produce antibiotics, but after finalizing the investigation report, strict action will be taken against those responsible.
The Minister of Health of Punjab said that proper storage of medicines is available at Mayo Hospital. However, he called the failure to provide medicines to the patients for the disqualification of the hospital’s medical superintendent.
Rafik further revealed that about 400 400 new nurses have been recruited recently, more services were hired at the Mayo Hospital.
About the incident, he said that only two nurses were on duty in the affected ward at the time. He confirmed that these nurses had made a mistake in the preparation of the solution.
