ISLAMABAD: Legislators from the Pakistan Tehreek -e -Insaf (PTI) and two Supreme Court judges refrained from attending the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) meeting in connection with the appointment of new judges in the Supreme Court.
Talking to reporters, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan confirmed that he did not participate in the meeting, saying: “The JCP meeting should be postponed until 26th. The cases against the amendment were not decided. “
Gohar also said that once the JCP meeting was over, it would be mentioned that not only two opposition lawmakers – himself and Senator Ali Zafar – but two other judges – Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Muneeb. Akhtar – also refused to attend the meeting. .
A few days ago, four judges of the Supreme Court, including two members of the Commission, including Justice Shah and Justice Akhtar, requested the meeting to be adjourned. In addition, in his letter, Zafar also asked Chief Justice Yahya Afridi to leave the meeting.
Barrister Gohar told reporters that the Judicial Commission meeting was prepared to decide on the appointment of eight judges. He added that PTI filed petitions against the 26th Amendment, which are still pending.
He said that Justice Shah and Justice Akhtar had written a letter to request the postponement of the meeting. In addition, Barrister Ali Zafar wrote a letter in which the same request was made.
However, since the meeting was not postponed, the PTI chose not to take part. “The Judicial Commission meeting is underway, but we are not participating,” he added.
Barrister Zafar, while talking to reporters, also maintained that the meeting should have been delayed until the issue of seniority was resolved in this meeting.
He added that the issue of seniority is also pending, but his concerns have not been resolved.
Barrister Gohar said, “PTI has already outlined its future process style,” he added that he fully supported the lawyers’ protest.
He reiterated, “Our objection was that the meeting should be postponed until the 26th Constitutional Amendment was decided.” However, the vote was held on this objection, and the majority decided to move forward in the meeting.
Meanwhile, lawyers are protesting against the 26th Amendment at D Chowk. The legal community has asked lawyers to gather at the famous protesters, where they will also announce their plans.
‘Raise our voice’
In his conversation with the media before the meeting, PTI Senator Zafar demanded the postponement of the JCP meeting until the issue of Islamabad High Court’s sanity was resolved.
He said that decisions about judges cannot be made until their sanity is determined. He further made it clear that he had no problem with the transfer but emphasized that the real concern was seniority.
“If [IHC] Chief Justice Aamir Farooq has been raised in the Supreme Court, we need to see who will replace him, “he added. Letters have been received.
Zafar said he would formally request his postponement during the meeting. “Boycott is not a solution,” he said. We should not give up the field but raise our voice. “
He emphasized the importance of collective advocacy, saying: “A unanimous voice can help solve these issues.” Instead of boycotting, he confirmed his commitment to present his position to ensure justice for the nation.
He acknowledged, “Many times the associations support this stance, while some oppose it.”
“Once the sanity problem is resolved, we can move forward with the 26th amendment proposal,” he said.
Zafar further remarked: “You cannot easily bring a judge from another court. People come, but institutions should remain strong.”
